What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I had someone try to buy my old A340E because the one on his Tundra overheated when he crimped a line going to the aftermarket transmission cooler he installed. Said the planetary gears were cooked after a couple miles.

Output shaft wasn’t long enough on the Tacoma A340E, so he didn’t pick it up.

 

I'm currently running Dakar's and stock shackles on the rear of my 2003 double cab, I think I ended up with about 2.5 inches of lift. I laid under my truck for a while the other night measuring for shocks. I've been doing some research on which shocks would fit under there, it looks like a bilstein 7100 short body in a 10 inch travel variety would work well for me. They're 14.29 inches collapsed, and with my extended bump stops, that 'should' work. Just some food for thought.

Edit: The 7100's come with heims, in past applications i have removed the heim and replaced it with an hour glass poly bushing. That was a while back, I'm not sure if they have changed lately. PN: AK7110SB05 is what I was looking at

 

Finally pulled the trigger on an ARB front bumper!
Install was simple once I tossed the ARB supplied instructions.
I could not be happier with the results. I still need to do some final adjustments to get the gaps just right.

 

a 15'' compressed shock is about a long as you can go with stock locations. Though i believe the 7100 that is a short body and is around 15'' compressed is actually a 12'' shock. That said you'll bottom the sock out with a taller bump which it sounds like you have so should be good.

If you want to use the stock mounts you'll still have to swap the heims for the bushings on the 7100s.

 

You are correct, I had my PN's crossed. 14.29 collapsed for the 10 inch travel short body, 16.1 collapsed for the 12 inch travel short body.

 

Thanks guys I was just curious. I plan on getting a little cargo trailer to pull to hunting camp and stuff so figured a little extra monitoring could help.

 

the 10'' will work a treat. The 12s fit. I know of several that have run them just need to get your bumps right. So kind of stinks as you loose up travel unless you have a lot of rear lift. Like 4''+

 

Yea, that sounds right. Given the uses of my truck I'm looking for a near 50/50 split in up/down travel.

 

Well you might be a tad low on lift for 10s still. I ran 10s with 4.5" of lift. I have 8s now for around 1.5-2''.

If you can flex it out to really measure before blowing the money that would be the best idea.

 

Finally got around to installing the winch into the ARB winch bumper. After all, why have a winch bumper without a winch? I bought the truck with the bumper on it and now it has a winch to fill the hole!
I had to relocate the solenoid box and chose a spot on the passenger side engine compartment. I like the way this turned out. Now to go pull something!
edit update: I just ordered a wireless remote for the winch. It was a whopping $16.00! I guess I will find out how long it lasts. The name brand ones are in the hundreds.

 

you might think about adding in cab controls or extending the plug for the remote so you can operate the winch with the hood down.

 

I have a remote that will reach to the drivers seat for self extraction efforts, if needed! Thinking of getting the wireless remote at a later date.

 

Got an oil change today from a local Amsoil dealer. My engine sounds brand new! Total game changer!!!

I'm itching to get parts coated and parts ordered but I plan on proposing so everything seems to be on hold. She puts up with me constantly wrenching and buying parts so she's a keeper for sure.

Yeah my girl and I got engaged in January...still trying to lock down a location but once we do we want to get married pretty quick, before the end of the year. I'm buying truck parts like crazy now even though it hurts because I know I won't be able to as easily real quick. We want to try for a kid not too long after the wedding too so I'll definitely be tight on truck spending lol.

She loves to wheel with me and is interested in the things I do to my truck so that helps.

Believe me, if it were up to me that's how we would do it. Unfortunately that's her call though lol, and she wants a wedding.

Fortunately, we are making it a small wedding at a state park (Redwood forest, cheap permits) because we have to finance it ourselves.
