I never owned a truck before and test drove a 2014 Tacoma pre runner double cab 2.7L I-4 Cyl Automatic 4X2. The ride was very stiff and kinda hurt my lower back.

Do all Tacoma rides this rough?

It's all personal preference. I'd go test drive the new ones or a different model. Some say the OR is not stiff enough, but I really like how it rides.

I wonder if the previous owner put a spacer on the truck you drove. That'll make the ride horrible.

The sales guy said the suspension is stiff so that it can haul things. I guess I'll have to test drive another one.

I edited my post after thinking maybe someone installed a spacer lift. Definitely look for that. Also depending on the miles a spacer lift was on, it can cause issues as well.

A truck from the factory will feel really tight, but smooth. After coming from a 2005 to a 2018, I realized I really should have replaced the shocks at some point on my 2005 to get that really nice riding feel that you get on new suspension.

    Yeah.
That is a really odd configuration. Double Cab or Access Cab? Pretty sure all double cabs have the V6. I haven't found the ride to be too stiff in any of my Double Cab Tacomas, maybe a bit on the soft side. Not sure about Access Cabs.

It's a truck. Trucks are designed to haul some weight in the bed. If the suspension is soft it won't carry any more weight than a car. Some trucks ride better than others, it depends on how they are set up. Small trucks like Tacoma's are all pretty similar with payloads of around 1200 lbs. The bigger 1/2 ton trucks are all over the place. Some have payloads of only 1100-1200 lbs and ride better than most cars. Others designed to carry more weight are in the 1700-2000 lb range and ride a little stiff, much like a Tacoma. Some are rated for 2000+ and some 3/4 ton's over 3000 lbs. When you combine that sort of payload with tires tough enough to haul it the ride can be very stiff.

Looks like a clean truck. I don't think there's a spacer lift, but maybe someone else has better eye's than me. For what it's worth, the suspension availability for Tacoma's are plentiful. If that's the only thing holding you back, I bet you could get it comfortable.

The sales guy said it was a v6 and that I should try a 4 cylinder for a smoother ride.

Sales guy is completely full of shit (pardon my french). Thats the 2tr-fe (2.7L 4cylinder) and the 4spd auto. Id avoid that guy, likely just trying to make a sale

Also if anything, the v6s ride a little better because they have the same suspension as the 4 cylinder but the motor weighs more..

That's what I thought cause that vehicle was slowww for a v6. I guess I'll test drive a v6 Tacoma see how it rides, thx y'all.

    Another Tacoma question..
How is a stock Tacoma for city driving, like commute to work on freeways and city streets?
I don't think I'll be doing much off-roading so the truck will be used mostly for city driving, maybe some beach and camping in the future.

The Tacoma is great for city driving with the auto trans. Both of mine are manuals, and if it was me I would put up with them in the city, but I'm a die hard m/t guy, so most would choose the auto for a city commute. There aren't really any big blind spots in these trucks, so I think that it would serve you well for what you plan on using it for. I've driven my dads double cab auto 4 cylinder in the city, and that thing is a peach. Super easy to drive and easy on gas. The v6 will get a little worse mileage, but with the auto it shouldn't be too bad!

I've always thought the Tacoma rode pretty nice and not truck like too much.

The Ranger that I traded in however, you knew that thing was a truck.

    Yeah.
I've been driving small trucks in urban/suburban areas for years. I tried a car for a while for gas mileage, hated it, went back to a Tacoma. My daughter actually thinks my truck rides smoother than cars, probably more due to larger wheels than suspension. Once you get used to sitting up higher with better visibility, it is tough going back to a car. As far as MT/AT, I used to prefer MT, but a few super heavy traffic days crossing town cured me of that.
