I am getting a perfect used tailgate off a '13 so hurry up with your skin. Also if you could figure out a way to make it swing out vs. drop down that would be awesome. Hinges on DS and latch on PS. I will eventually have a bumper with a swingout. I have been thinking about more of the door style tailgate and integrating cubbies like what's in the bed to a reinforcing skin.

Yeah I got ya. I may play with my tailgate in figuring out the latch mechinism and hinges then use that as a template for the new/used one. I am thinking for hinges a pin system like what the Wranglers use may be the easiest and simplest way just gotta figure out the latch. Then I'd like to do a better job sealing around the gate.

Just take off the bottom pieces that hook into the pivots on for the tailgate, remove one side of either latch and the hoop it latches to on the bed. Add heavy duty hinges. Boom.
You may want to reinforce the bedsides if you do this however, since the whole weight of the tailgate will be on one side.

Yeah there is a good amt of space behind the taillight to be able to reinforce good point I forgot about the weak bedsides. Maybe the tailgate pulling the bedside inwards will counteract the cap pushing it outwards. I do have the TC stiffeners already but some angle or channel in behind the taillight would definitely be needed.

https://www.grainger.com/product/KABA-ILCO-Right-Hand-Pivot-Hinge-With-40JK84 Two of these, rated for 125lbs each, should be able to handle the tailgate, with tire, but not a whole lot more. It would be best, weld some plate to the outside of the Drivers side of both your tailgate and your bedside, then fab up custom hinges for it in a similar style. You'd probably have to trim the edge of the tailgate to allow the hinge to protrude out. As for latching, the stock latch on the right side should do plenty and still use your factory handle. Though, with a ton of weight, it may also need upgraded.

Not going to mount the tire to the tailgate going to have that mounted to a bumper with a swingout. Those hinges look sweet and would really be a nice touch.

Wouldn't I need the Left hand hinges though if the hinges will be mounted on the drivers side and swing out that direction?

Yeah. Some style as jeep doors. Which reminds me, the place I offroaded at, has stalls to sit your jeep doors while you're out wheeling lol.

On another note, I got my CV axles for my polaris in and my new Rhino Strap. Got a code for 15% off rhino stuff too. Shackle hitch here I come!

I just figured it out don't know why I didn't think of this earlier but I'll go to the u-pull it wrecking yard and get the hinges off of a big van or burban or the like with the barn style doors and adapt those. Crap I am slow sometimes and overthink things.

    Or a wrecked jeep too!

On another thing, my wife said I should get another truck on the cheap and offroad it instead of our baby. So I put in another bid on a Tacoma. :fingerscrossed::anonymous: Goes to auction tomorrow. We'll see.

I put in a bid on a flooded 2013 Black DCSB. :spending:Its a salvage title, I don't care if it the engine or trans is bad, I'll just teach myself everything about the 1GRFE. Or swap something a little more gutsy in.

Nice hope you won't have electrical issues with it. How hard is it to rebuild titles where you are. It's pretty easy here in NC. You could really go wild with that thing and not really worry about it too much.

I can title it as salvage here and still license it. Not 100% on how insurance will handle it. I just want a trail rig, so if I have to trailer it so be it. As far as electrical, I'd probably strip it all out and start over. Then build it to my wants and needs.

If it was from the flooding down south, I'd imagine its pretty well dried out now, so I'll check everything out for shorts and what not, then try to jump it and see if it's seized or if its just a case of a shorted out battery. Baby steps.
