Cars we used to drive - 1980 and older that no one would care about but you

Any interest in taking this past 1980?

 

1980 Sunbird hatchback. Mine was red.

 

1980 Malibu Classic. Just like this one.

 

1981 Grand Prix...same color(s).

 

1972 Plymouth Valiant Scamp. Slant six with zero power. Loved that car...

 

1981 Camaro. Base model, 267 V8 (I think my 2.7 Taco is faster). So base, it didn't even have a rear spoiler. Mine was gold...everywhere.

 

'81 Mustang. Basic 4cyl 4-speed. Mine was black.

 

1964 VW Beetle

1972 Pinto Wagon. First car, still own it.

 

1967 Cougar. Nice car but oh the rust underneath...

 

Loved my 1972 Monte Carlo. The car I most regret selling.

 

First car was a pristine 1963 Buick La Sabre 4 door just like the one in the picture. It had a 410 ci motor with a two barrel carb. My dad bought it for $100 and gave it to me after I took his IH Travelall 4wheeling and got escorted home by the state police. Was the first and last time I drove any car he owned.

 

1981 "Iraqi Taxi" There is a valid story behind the name. Back in 1981, Iraq ordered some 25,000 '81 Malibus from GM of Canada. IIRC, they were meant to be Government vehicles, but most ended up being used as taxis. All were equipped the same way except for color...a 1981 Chevrolet Malibu 4-door, with a 3.8L (229 C.I.) Chev V6, 3-speed manual on-the-floor, bench seat (with heavy tweed cloth), A/C, AM/FM/Casette, no rear de-fog, and steel wheels painted body color, with dog-dish hubcaps. They also had a 200kph speedo (at a time when domestic ones were all 140kph or 85 mph). At around 13,000 cars, Iraq cancelled the order, and left GM Canada stuck with thousands of these odd-ball cars that nobody wanted.

Mine was brown. Before it went to the big scrapheap in the sky, I snagged the pedal assembly, linkage, mounts, a chunk of the floor, and the shifter trim. This will make a 4-speed swap into any 78-87 GM A/G body a snap.

 

Some useless Chebby trivia...
1st gen Monte's had the longest hoods of any Chevrolet.
Oh ,and that fan shroud...looked like half of a 55 gallon drum.
Cool cars and a guy who lived down the street from me growing up had a '70 SS 454. Rare as hen's teeth now.

 

Had this briefly with a 350 stuffed under the hood . My dad took it back to the dealership he worked at . Said I was gonna kill myself ,car was too fast !

 

Had a 71 Cadillac De Ville around 1981 . Clean , 1 owner . Dealership Sold it to me for $100 after someone traded it in . Friggen totaled it in 3 months . Passed out behind the wheel drunk . Junkyard gave me $300 ,wish I still had that car !

 

My first car was the Motor Trend Car of the Year: The 1980 Chevrolet Citation.



This is exactly how it looked when my parents handed it down to me in 1984 after my brother had his way with it. I was 16 and the rear seats folded down, so it was perfect. I moved on to a '78 T/A that I bought a year later during my senior year of high school after the Citation's tranny let go at 75k. Lost my license twice in the T/A, so I flipped it for a '78 Bronco in 1987 to slow me down. we put a 4" lift and 36" tires on it and broke other laws. When I finally realized that I needed to go to college in 1990 I traded my dad for his gently used '86 Celica because the Bronco got 8 mpg and wouldn't fit in any of the parking garages on campus. he took the Bronco and use it as a trade-in for a newer Celica.

 

Drove my parents car when I got my license. 1979 Buick LeSabre aka the Brown Bullet. It was NOT as nice as this one...
