Unless you are racing across the desert for time or you are towing heavy 5X a week then I can safely say you are not in the severe service portion. Do the calculations. I have. A normal person (me) is running at around 25% rated engine load on average. That's not severe. I really think, as much as some of these guys second guess the engineers, that they should change their oil every 100 miles, based on their convoluted logic.

Oilfield service on dusty unpaved roads for the majority of the mileage.

Yes that's severe I would say. Most oil contamination is from dirt making it past the air filter.

It's 2018... Why in the world would you use conventional oil?

    5L of Mobil1 Full-Synthetic 0W-20 is $22.88 at walmart and that's every 10,000 miles...

Walmart is $22.88 and Mobile has a $10 or $12 rebate going almost all the time. So $10-$12 for 5 QTs of Mobile 1. Can't beat that with a stick.

Synthetic is not required. Put what the heck you want in it. Your truck. If you want any resemblance of protection after 10k miles with oil this thin, you know what to do.....

I've come to learn that some people are just stuck in their ways and won't listen to anyone, including the people that designed a product, because they think someone is trying to pull one over on them. They still think car manufactures make cars to last just long enough to pay it off then they will die, so you have to buy a new car.
Toyota is changed the oil every 5k on their dime. Now it's my dime and I'm doing it every 10k like stated. I've done this is my Lexus with the 3.5L and it's been fine for 70k miles.

This reminds me of tire pressures. Do you run what's on the door sticker per the manufacturer? Or what's on the tire by the tire maker?? Does Toyota know better than Goodyear what's best for their tires?? I always run my tires 5 psi less than max (cold). In AZ, more PSI translates to less generated heat. Rarely do I get less than 40K from any tire. Mud terrains at max PSI on the JKU had almost 30K and were half worn with no cupping.... You have been hijacked!!! (cause this thread is a :deadhorse:)

Every time I change my own I buy it for around that price at Wal-Mart and swing by Napa and get a filter, either wix or Napa gold(made by wix) I don't understand why you would want to use a conventional oil it is obviously inferior to synthetic or everything would not be switching to synthetic. And if its to save money, unless your gonna use the cheapest advance auto filter and house brand cheap oil how much could you really save, especially since you are going to increase the change intervals. And since I've seen these motors inside and out after durability tests(we build 2gr for fwd at my work) which one test parks motor at 5500 rpms for hours, and will do full throttle pulls to red line over and over, all done with load, if the 0w20 syn is fine for this its fine for my driving.

The plastic air dam piece under the front of the truck that adds a small fraction of mpg but looks like crap.
Me, I make it how I want it to look and screw the gas mileage.
    I took mine and off.

Not all the trucks come with them, you know. The air dam has nothing to do with meeting CAFE standards. It's a trim level thing.

Why 0w-20? Because that's the best way to improve fuel mileage. Less pumping loss and windage drag in the crankcase. Your choice, but being that Toyota is an engineering company that builds cars you'd be best served using the recommended oil.

Why run larger tires or a different engine tune? Why do some feel the need to change the suspension? It was engineered and there can be no possible improvements..ever. If Toyota wanted you to have it they would have sold it that way.
That’s a straw man and appeal to authority right back at ya. Dissapointed in the level of discussion.

They're aren't hooking you up. Synthetic is the bare minimum that the manual does call for. At 10K intervals though, I'd consider a higher quality oil if you plan to keep the truck for a super long time.
