Can you get any good pics of the teeth where they broke off want to see if I see any stress lines in the grains of the gear or if the grains look normal. Could indicate how they are failing. If there is stress lines then either weak hardening or not enough meat for the stresses induced. If not and the grains look normal then something happened in the casting porosity, poor casting, contaminants, etc.

 

Looks like a combination of weak casting and only a couple spots with stress lines so it was what was holding the teeth to the ring then when they gave up the weak casting was exposed. That's what it looks like to me in the pics. Thanks Tim how'd I know you probably have those pics!

Ill talk with ECGS when I get over there, see what they can offer as far as reasoning for this. First time happened on stock gears, this one on 4.56s

 

That is quite an interesting issue as all of us drive in conditions as such and we could be just as liable for a blow out depending on what ECGS's answer is. I would like to think something was up with your set that as to me that just doesn't make sense to have a failure on such a casual ascent. Do you think ECGS will partially take care of you or warranty the work? I got Yukon gears in mine with a limited lifetime warranty assuming I don't do something utterly retarded.

 

Yes, ECGS will do warranty repair this time. next time likely not..............

 

Relieved to hear this. Do they only offer a one time offer on warranty? I understand that they don't probably want to reinstall a new set and all, but kind of a bummer should this happen again as ideally they are the ones who touched it last. Assuming your break in goes like normal and swapping of the fluids, I would hope they are open to continued support for this.

 

Agreed, will have that discussion. I did the break in religiously by the book, and ran 85/140 lucas per their recommendation. swapped out every 30K.

 

Jimbo took it like a champ. Shit breaking is just part of the game.

 

Considering how Jimbo wheeled when his failed...yea I would want answers for why that happened. It sounded like he was creeping in 4wheel up a casual incline. Im sure it created more load than being on the street, but not sure if I would categorize it as a wheeling failure.

 

The trails we did before hand could’ve caused stress on it.

I’ve never really understood this whole new gear break in crap. Bought my truck with 4 miles on it and hit the highway. I know per the manual, new cars have a break in period with things such as not towing the first 1000 miles, not slamming the brakes, making sure you constantly change speeds..etc. but nothing like the “break in” for new gears. If all new gears must be broke in with cool down periods and such, why is this not a problem with buying a new car??

 

Could have to a degree, but I would still be suspect. If these trails required excessive throttling to conquer them, then sure that may not help the case. From another member though, it sounds like some weak casting may have been in play.

I got the vibe of what you mean Jimbo, I think its easier to have a steady cruising speed on terrain as you describe instead of inching along. Regardless, looking forward to what they say.

 

Haven’t had to change my diff fluid either lol. Makes me wonder
