30K should be the time, and every 30K after that

Well yeah for normal changes though right? Didn’t you have to drain and flush it after that 1000 mile “break in” period is over too?

I’m at 28k now, I do plan on changing it soon

I think the factory might use machines to a degree to help with consistency in the install and might have a slightly better tolerance on the gear design? I say this completely loosely as your guess is as good as mine, but you are right some guys follow the break in down to the T on a new vehicle vs others just start going like normal and rarely do you see an issue unless its a lack of fluid in the initial delivery of the vehicle. If there is less of a break in for the gears to seat perfectly then naturally there will be less of a need to swap the fluids. I think many Tacoma owners may not even swap their fluids until they are well past the 100k mark. Many I have discussed the diff with didn't even know that 30k is the desired interval to change it out at.

maybe the owner's manual says something about the "breaking in" periods? and all the paper work you sign just has something hidden in there "I read the manual" and the dealerships just aren't required to tell you? just thinking out loud. I've never bought a new car.

Something either is wrong with the gears (the way they was installed), or the e locker maybe. I say this because he was on 265’s the first time it happened on stock gears, now on 255’s on 4.56. I was running 35’s on stock gears and hit shit pretty hard and luckily didn’t have any problems.

All the trails Jimbo did I’ve done in mine.
I’m sure that ECGS will figure out the problem.

Could also be a sales tactic to a degree. If some guy already doesn't want to do much maintenance and have a strong truck platform they could be looking into a Toyota. Then the dealer tells him to make sure he does his diff every 30k...could give the wrong impression at a clutch moment on a sale. Although I would rather be informed personally about the vehicle as Im awesome at forgetting to read stuff.

Agreed. That is scary though that there is a track record starting now with the second diff. I wonder if the diff housing could play a factor? That is the only consistent item through this right?

Yeah it’s in the manual, I’m one of those guys that made sure to follow those instructions. Constantly changing speeds, not towing, not slamming on brakes etc. but I do know several people who have driven several states away (on vacation and such) and bought a new car then drove it straight back all highway. I’ve witnessed new trucks pulling out of the dealership with large enclosed trailers attached haha. Idk, just got to thinking about that and jogged my curiosity. Lol

Oh yea man no doubt, imagine how many guys buy a vehicle in a different state and choose to drive it back due to a better deal? Im sure some of those dudes just hit cruise control on the way back.

My 2011 OR has the e-locker.. Lube changed @ 52k miles. Swapped gears myself @ 110k to aftermarket. New lube then. Now @ 152k. I don't hammer the truck, but it does 12 to 15 off road trips a year. (Black Mountain, Moab, etc...) so it has NOT been babied...Truck IS automatic...so there is that...

    But. No breakage.

Without seeing it, I gotta suspect issues with rear end....

I sent some pics over to ECGS this AM, reply below.

5 years from Date of purchase not limited by occurrence. The TV6 Elocker is not big enough for the weight , power, tire size. We typically don’t have to many issues with the Taco’s but the FJ cruiser due to extra weight are almost guaranteed to fail with large tires and someone that beats on it.

The break was clean wiped 3 teeth, these 3 teeth were engaged, to much force, teeth sheer. We believe we are using the best gear made and the choices are fairly limited. Hopefully it was just a fluke, bad luck and this next one will hold up longer, or we build a Dana 60 for it….

Makes you wonder if guys who have swingouts might have had some gear issues similar?
