Was just camping at a state park here in VA this weekend and they had the exact same ones.

I've always wanted one of those heavy duty charcoal grills you see in parks. There are similar ones at Northern Tool, but they're not as high quality.

Exactly. The whole point is the thick plating that can sit outside for several decades without much upkeep. Who knows what youre getting with those mail orders. Maybe one day I'll have good enough welding skills to make one :)

I'm not sure where we get ours at work, but I would recommend a semi-truck or heavy equipment rim. They are alot thicker and will last a whole lot longer. Part of the problem with the fire ring is there's an ancor that gets set into the ground to allow it to be flipped up for easier clean out. Whether you set the anchor in dirt or concrete, electrolysis sets in and they rust out in a few years. We also have some set in open camp areas and they tent to get ran over.

One bad thing about rims v. fire rings at the campground is, during Stage 1 Fire Restrictions, you can only have an open fire in a provided fire ring or bbq stand. So the truck rim isn't "approved". But you can talk to the local agency and see what they will allow.

If you still like the fire ring idea better and you want to set it on your own land, I would recommend flipping the ring up verticle when not in use so it's not in contact with the ground or old ash.

Some go through GSA, but in the end, (other than Lighthouse for the Blind who deals pretty much gov't exclusive) the vendors we go through are public vendors. Even in the GSA catalog, they are just GSA approved vendors. When shopping, compare like items and go for the better specs when there's mutliple businesses offer it. Get the best bang for the buck.

...and some aren't as well made as you'd want and are less than 3/16". We see alot of people who bring old clothes washer drums.

I think most are ceramic. I have one that is ceramic coated in my backyard. I don't think they're anymore dangerous than the lead paint in Kindergarten....

We're slowly moving away from rings and going with grill stands. They last longer and don't get ran over as often.

Does anyone know if the West Yellowstone entrance is open? I'm driving up from Moab and need to get to Gardiner. Figured I would drive up 15 through Salt Lake, into Idaho, then cut over to West Yellowstone and up to Gardiner unless someone can recommend a better route.

I'm going work in the park this summer.
