What an idiot. I'm glad that a uniformed soldier called her out on this and that the crowd attending the event knew it was wrong and rightfully "boo'd" her. Please, keep us updated.

Not trying to pick a fight because her choice of timing and venue was horrible for her point of view- but the class president/advisors/university invited her to speak- They probably should have checked on what she was planning to say.

And speaking up in uniform- specially on a political topic is dangerous. Even if he's been a vocal type of guy his whole life- Military rules are totally different...and that shit can come back and bite him hard.

Maybe. Same with all the Latina women who were in their Military uniform showing up at protests against the Bill.

Either way. I am glad he literally took a stand.

She is entitled to her own opinion. But at someones graduation? Really? Very inappropriate.

Wow, can't people graduate from their hard and well earned degrees without this nonsense crap about the immigration bit. I'd be livid if I was graduating and that was one of the speeches.

Hey guys, I was there as well. My son, another newly commissioned 2nd. LT. was graduating and most of the graduates were not too happy with her. I wrote a letter to Shelton, and the Dean of the college. We were booing with the masses. Here's the answer from the Dean.:

    Dear Roy,

I am writing in response to your recent correspondence regarding the UA Social and Behavioral Sciences Convocation ceremony speech by Professor Sandra Soto.
For what it's worth, yours was among over 100 letters, emails, and phone calls we received, and interestingly the comments ran in roughly equal in number, pro and con.

I personally read your comments, and I want you to know that I understand and appreciate your concerns. On behalf of the College, I also want to emphasize that the University holds numerous graduation ceremonies each year, and we invite speakers from all political persuasions and walks of life. Some are students; others are administrators, faculty, alumni, and public figures. In inviting these individuals to our podiums, we do not pre-screen their content.

Universities are places to learn and discover, and to offer the world reasoned, thoughtful, and yes, sometimes controversial positions on a host of issues.
Commencement is a time when we gather the university's many communities -- students, faculty, parents, supporters and friends -- and sometimes our guest speakers use that time to share controversial ideas.

This is a difficult time for our state and nation. The political temperature now is as high as it has ever been, and I am not surprised that Professor Soto's remarks were viewed as divisive. I do hope that you can share the perspective that, whatever one's position on these issues, it is a hallmark of our democratic society that they be heard and discussed publicly and respectfully.
It is for that reason that I went to the podium to ask that the audience allow Professor Soto time to complete her remarks.

Thank you for your thoughtful criticism of the afternoon's events.

    Sincerely,

    John Paul Jones III, Dean
    Social and Behavioral Sciences

Sometimes you just want to smack someone upside the head!

Wow there are so many things wrong with this letter. The first half is nothing but distraction from the subject.

Maybe this should be a policy that they need to change; graduation should be enjoyed by all, not just some of a certain political persuasion.

It's sad though that this ideal doens't translate in to most of our schools. As a student your usually told that if you have a different idea or belief on something that your wrong and not part of the enlightened thinkers of the liberal left.

Why is this such a hard time for our state? Because we passed a state law that is already a federal one? I can think of worse situation that we could be in. To me, this is just another proof that the educational system is out of touch with the rest of the real world. To the last part of this paragraph, when was the disenting side allowed to speak and their opinion be heard?

    Censorship....
