I didn't read every bit of it, but that is a good read. My Ferd F150 has developed what I thought was a warped desk recently, hmm.

It's at 279,000+ miles now, so it is definitely time to check out bushings, tie rod ends, etc. while I am at it.

 

Yes that is true "warped" is the layman's term to explain it to customers but they can develop high and low spots that is why we turn them. For a while there was a big kick in on the car turning of rotors because of the matched mating of the hub and rotor hat, but that was a marketing pitch by the on the car lathe manufacturers, and getting the run out set for those things is a huge PITA. If they warp you are putting some serious heat into them like the F1 racecars and I know of no mass produced car that can brake that hard and that duration without loosing all braking because of cooking the fluid off, or the cast iron completely grenading.

Ball joints are very common on those trucks jack it up by the control arms then you can use a pry bar or something under the tire to lift up on the tire and see if there is any play in the ball joints. Suspension has to be loaded to check them.

 

Good advice, thank you. At 280K I am doing an oil change and tire rotation. I will check it out then.

 

If it inspires someone to do some maintenance and keep their vehicle safe and in good operating conditions, it's cool.

 

If only more guys would do as much preventative maint. and inquiry into repairing as you do there would be better maintained and working vehicles on the rd.

 

Today's alignment after changing tie-rods, looks like I didn't get them as close as I thought I did lol. @blksandpearl2010 here's my numbers.

Yea I'd take that shit back and have them up that caster. They adjusted toe and just got the camber into the green. That's a prime example of a toe-n-go

 

I had a feeling that they barely touched it. I scheduled it for 5pm, 5:20 still in parking space I left it in facing the same direction, 5:27 finally took it back, then told me it was ready (but spoke to me about the caster issue) at 6:07. I was originally told it would take about an hour or hour and fifteen minutes. so now I am likely going to try a different Firestone, maybe one over downtown Raleigh, or at my old house off wake forest road. Main reason is the store manager was the one explaining everything to me, so I likely won't go to that one at 401 again.

 

Haha I tried soo many different stores. Ask specifically for Daniel Gallagher if he still works there.
