What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Figured it had to do with it bein Automatic.

Plus I know I'm driving a few miles slower (3-4 mph) then what what guage is showing too. It's hard to get an accurate reading. It's ballpark numbers.

 

Same here. Just a rough guess. Personally, id rather be 3k+ and in the power band with shitty mileage rather than lower rpms. Helps with hills and headwinds when i have the cruise control set that way i dont have to downshift and then reset the cruise and what not. But then again you wouldnt have to touch the gas too much with an auto on cruise control. So i guess the pros and cons offset eachother.

I think they’d be really handy, my beds decent, I can imagine under the bedlinder inside the bed isn’t pretty, judging by the rust on the seams under it anyway. And it’s got a tear in it that I was planning on cutting away with a HC bumper. But really, when you can get a new bed made for basically the same cost as a new bumper.... it’s tempting.

I think my tires are only rated at 90 mph

 

At 72 mph indicated, which is 70 on the nose according to the GPS, I am at 2500 RPMs. That is with overdrive and converter lock up.

I don't think your MPGs will take a hit in those conditions when you regear. The engine doesn't have to work as hard to maintain speed because of the added leverage from the gears.

Right now, with big 33s, I get better MPGs at 75-80 than I do at 70-75. Something is happening there. And I do not drive at 90 even if the speed limit says I can.

 

Yeah 90s for chumps around here 92 is where it's at, well that's at least what puts the least stress on the engine as far as high speed goes for me

 

Got a roof rack from a new land cruiser. Mocking it up today to cut it down to size..I had to shorten it 21” to get it to fit length wise on my shell. Still have to measure and cut width wise to get it to fit. Will update later if I have time tomorrow.

 

hahaha Mine are Q rated. Ive had them at 95 no problem though

 

I think i get ideal gas mileage at 70 on flatish ground but hilly stuff 80 ends up bein the winner. The fastest ive cruised is 85 considering CO highways are 75mph usually...at least I25

My sandblaster probably wasn’t the right tool to remove paint from flat steel panels. Blasters are great on porous surfaces and even some smooth surfaces but the Enamel paint just didn’t give up. The Garnet media I was using for this panel ate through the rust and paint on my front differential like it was nothing. I regularly use the Aluminum Oxide media for when I refinish my Cadillac horns since the paint is relatively thin.

Ended up picking up a DA sander, which was the right tool. Took the paint off twice as fast.

Was about to get the welder hooked up and working today, but Miller decided to use a female disconnect for the power lead instead of ring terminals for some reason. Having trouble finding a female disconnect that would fit the thick 240v cable.

Think I need to get it down completely to bare metal, or am I okay where I am at now with the sanding? I sanded down any obvious deep scratches and feathered it as best as I can.



Say what you want - but I’m being extra and refinishing it like this because it’s great practice for when I eventually do body work.

Tacoma wise, I’m picking up my Icons from the post office tomorrow.

 

Hmm, looks like I'm gonna be buying a fuel and timing calibrator. Ran into something interesting. Sometime the truck pulls like a freight train, sometimes it pulls nicely but not crazy, sometimes it falls like it is instantly naturally aspirated again. Watching the timing like a hawk makes me think it is pulling too much timing for whatever reason. Doesn't seem knock related, at least I cannot hear any ping. But lots of folks cite overly sensitive knock sensors and pulled timing as the bane of their acceleration issues. I had one pull where it was like magic, bang shifted 2nd through 5th and it was enough to force me into my seat the whole time up to 75mph. But I tried that again at the next on ramp and was met with single digit timing advance and much less vigor.

I'd leave it at that. All you need to do is rough up the surface enough for primer to stick.
