Dual Bluetooth Media player... because: cheap.

It was only $20...plays my spotify... and I can talk to people on it.

My speakers are aftermarket as well... however the first owner had it done in the early 2000's so I don't know what they are exactly. They sound really good though.

 

For either kit there is some adjustment you can do. Basically there is a plastic "wing" screwed into each side of the headunit that indexs on the main surround plastic piece. You can change the depth and the angle of the headunit based on what holes you use in each plastic wing. I've used both kits and like the Schosche better, it blended into the surrounding dash better than the metra unit.

It's pretty easy to take the stereo out and reconnect the plastic pieces but if you paid for the job and don't like it I'd ask them to fix it first and see what they say.

 

What's the rotary switch under the a/c controls?

 

That was for turning up and down my subwoofer!!

 

It's a remote bass knob that is used to control the gain of the subwoofer.

Upgraded from pioneer avic z130bt to kenwood dnx 875s. Couldn't be more happier. Love the new features (apple carplay, front camera) Touchscreen is capacitive so response is ultra fast.

 

That looks niiice... might get something like that for the Civic. How much did that set you back?!

My 1989 Alpine 3552 multi channel amp finally started showing its age so I replaced it with a JL Audio 300/4V3 Slash 75x4. Now thinking of installing some 6x9s in boxes for the Access Cab to take advantage of the back channels. I like the 24 db crossover. It cleans up my front component speakers nicely! Here's a pic when I installed it last month. The sound is as least as clean as the Alpine was in its prime. (Also have a 500 watt mono Alpine feeding a 10" MTX sub behind the driver's seat.)

 

If you have a sub I wouldn't worry about the 6x9's in a box. Putting vocal speakers behind you ruins sound staging. I'd take that JL 4 channel amp and bridge it into a 2channel amp, run that to the front speakers. As long as the signal is clean they'll take it. More power to the fronts.

 

I used to run my Alpine 3554 multichannel bridged to 150x2 and it was a bit much for the 20-year-old Infinity Beta 6 components. That amp developed problems so I swapped in the 3552 and bridged it to 85x2 and that seemed a better match. (Both amps were left over from previous installs.)
I talked with two different car audio shops and both cautioned against running the JL at 150x2. They thought it was too much power for those speakers.
My old 2002 Tacoma extra cab had factory rear speakers that I had running off the deck and it seemed like a nice rear fill.
I want to add some much needed mid bass, as currently I have good mids and high frequency and good low bass but little to no mid bass.
Just this past weekend I had a local shop run a set of RCA interconnects off the rear output of my 11 band Alpine EQ so I can fade the output to the rear speakers. (I’m sure my Dachshunds could care less about rear sound and would appreciate the speakers faded out!!)

 

That's impressive to have your speakers for 20 years. I go ta few subs and tons of hardware from the 90's, but no mids/highs. Right now my Focals are 80watts RMS. I've been pushing 200watts to them since 2012 and haven't looked back or ever had issues. I also tune my stereo using an O-Scope so I know there is no distortion going to them. I'm sure they will cap out in the next 2-4 years as I park outside and the summer here is just brutal on everything.

 

I bought the Infinity Beta Six’s in May of 1998 and had them installed in a 1989 Ford F-350 Crew Cab 4x4. I also bought the Alpine 11 band EQ at the same time. (I was powering them with an Alpine 3542 60x2 amp and using the 3552 bridged to run two Boston Acoustics 8” subs)

I sold that truck in ‘02 when I bought the new five lug Tacoma extra cab. That truck didn’t have room for the 6.5” mids but the stereo shop had a used set of Beta 5.25 mids that worked with the x-over and tweeters. I put the 6.5” mids in storage and powered the Beta 5’s with the front half of the Alpine 3554 at 50x2. The back half was bridged to 85x1 for the MTX sub.

That truck was rear ended and totaled by a woman who was on her phone when I was stopped at a stop light on my 50th birthday three years ago. I bought the 2011 Tacoma PreRunner a year later after the insurance mess was finally over.

I had the same shop reinstall my same components in the 2011 Tacoma but I wanted to bridge the 3554 to 150x2 for the Beta 6’s. They didn’t seem to like the extra power. I added the 500x1 mono Alpine sub amp then too.

The 3554 started to make very strange non-musical sounds after a bit. I thought maybe it had been damaged in the accident so I replaced it with the 3552. That amp went another year or so until it started going out.

Now I’m noticing the Infinity Beta 6 mids are occasionally sounding like they’re under water. Not sure if this is due to age or a loose speaker connection. I’ve noticed it on both sides but not at the same time. It’s been a long strange trip.

That's pretty awesome. As for the under water sounds they are on the way out. I think you got your monies worth out of them! When you take them out you should take a picture of them and send your story to Boston Acoustic. Never know maybe they'll give you some free stuff.

 

The speakers in question are Infinitys. The I got rid of the Bostons with the F-350.
Can I replace just the mids? When I asked Crutchfield, they told me that was not advisable because the component set was designed as a 'system' and the passive XP-1 crossover wouldn't work well with other speakers. The tweeters are still sounding fine. I do have the 5.25" Beta 5 mids in the closet. I could swap those in I guess when the 6's finally go belly up.

 

It doesn't hurt to try and see how it sounds. I'd have to read the manual for the speakers to see what that crossover is doing that makes it special.

Edit: looks like a normal crossover to me if I'm reading the right manual.

 

I don’t have the manual anymore, but from what I can remember the tweeters play down low; 1.5k, 3k? Something like that.

When I hit bumps the mids will often times give that ‘under water’ distortion sound. Is that the voice coils going south?

The cross overs are Beta XP models I believe and they came with the set of mids, tweeters and crossovers. The crossovers are huge and made out of clear plexi so you can see the caps and coils.
