Gardening Thread - Show me your gardens!

well the only real leak was in the middle of the seam where the long sides are connected...everything else seems to be ok. Last one is the snow we woke up to this morning. Not much but still too much for April!!

 

Is the frame made out of aluminum? Do you have a metal supply store nearby? Places like that usually have remnant piles for sale. Aluminum flat bar for bracing could possibly help against the load of the snow.

 

that amount of snow would shut you guys down...this amount here is just enough to make us mad...LOL

 

Yeah the real problem is going to be the top cross member...I think a 2x4 frame inside will help.

 

Ya, usually 'bout this time I'm itchin' to get out there but it's demoralizing having to wait many more weeks cuz everything frozen cock stiff.

 

Tell me about it...usually by now spring fishing is picked up and going strong...we've barely been out thus far. We had one good day this month. I havent even looked at the garden...

 

I hear ya!, one nice day is all we got. Wake Up once or twice a week to this. Suns got lotsa punch now tho.

 

Yeah, that wooden floor will help with that. Good deal.

 

i'm done with snow. Our forcast for the next few days is "large hail, tornadoes possible, high winds with potential blizzard like conditions" WTF!

 

So far so good. Lost one potato plant due to too much watering I believe. But I planted in its place the Frankenstein taters that were in the wine cooler.





Paris Market carrots looking good too. So far this protection against nature’s little beasts taking our hard work has paid off.

 

No work on the greenhouse yet but trying to swamp myself with gardening work and figuring out what the hell I'm doing.

A bunch of veggies, just planted some strawberry seeds, have some potatoes that I need to figure out exactly how to grow the little sprout nub things.

Just started hitting them with the fan to get them stronger. Garden beans went from being put in dirt to being 7" tall in three days (they are top tray in the second picture). The romaine lettuce is the only thing that's taking a minute to sprout.


We didn't have smaller pots but the random concrete forms made perfect pots so far.

 

Correct me if I’m wrong, but what I was taught was to cut like a square (more or less) piece around the eye and plant the eye pointing upwards. I also just planted whole potatoes and they took off. But I’m not sure what that outcome will be.

 

I was taught that as long as it's got an eye in it, it doesn't matter how you cut it or place it, she'll sprout, lol.

 

I dunno we used to just cut in half and put the cut side down...the best thing is to have well draining soil.

 

I heard in the depression they just planted a thick slice of skin with an eye, and they grew just fine. They didn't want to plant a big chunk of potato because they wanted to eat it.

If they are small potatoes, like fingerlings, I plant the whole thing. It they are big I cut them. Potatoes are pretty easy to get to grow, so I wouldn't worry too much.

 

And they love fresh earth, so if you're planting them for the first time in that spot they're pretty much guaranteed to sprout.

 

bought a couple cherry trees today, rainier and stella. Wont see any fruit for a couple years but still cool.

 

Rainier and Royal Rainier are my two favorite cherries by far. I had a Royal that had a lot of fruit in the first two years but died with the drought. I recently planted a new Royal after my back yard was renovated.



I had a Stella that never fruited much. It was 10 years old until another tree outside our yard ran a huge root that suffocated it. I kept watering it and could not figure out how it died until I dug it up.

 

I’m prepping for planting this week. I manually turned the beds yesterday, will till them tomorrow or Friday, plant and mulch on the weekend.

Wish I had broccoli in already, but was it was still too cold.
