Having used both, I would go dual every day of the week.

Anyone have any recommendations for a 1st time ar build? From what I gather the parts to not skimp on are the barrel, trigger, and bgc.

I'm Leo and we have lwrc m6's at work. I'm looking for a quality rifle that won't break the bank. Mostly using it for range training.

I've mostly been looking at brownells and psa. Any other websites to pay attention to when sourcing parts?

Finally got to shoot my 6.5 Grendel AR. Shoots well, I still need to zero it and shoot something reactive like ice or a watermelon. Very fun though, no jams after I realized that you can't slowly close the bolt with steel case. Just gotta drop it shut.

Nice! as in most guns, you want to duplicate the energy that the gun/rifle would see in its own functioning to get another round. I constantly run across shooters that want to let the slide down softly with there hands because (and I quote) they don't want to hurt the gun!!!! LOL And I look at them and say what about the next round coming into battery???? and then they think about it a minute and smile! owww yaaa!

Just order from BCM. PSA is fine and all, but BCM is the lowest quality i'd buy personally. Not that they are low quality, but they have the unquestionable best price/quality point in my opinion.

MY primary rifle is a DD M4A1, which i'd recommend over anything, but it's not a budget rifle.

I suppose this is the place to ask: Where does the money go in an AR after furniture? Tolerances? Coatings? Roll marks?

Receiver composition, not all "forgings" are equal, and some are not forged at all... Assembly, fit and finish quality, quality of LPK items, barrel quality, headspace and timing tune, etc.

There's a lot that goes into it.

My DD came with a standard A2 pistol grip and an MOE stock. Neither of which are super baller pieces of furniture, and both were replaced quickly. But the rifle cycles smoothly and quietly, and it'll chew through any ammo. Reloads, garbage steel (avoid it like the plague) and weak factory packed ammo. It's just a very well built and balanced rifle. I have buddies with nice home-built rifles using good parts from BCM BCG's, Noveske barrels etc. but they won't cycle some 223, or a random dad's friends reloads. I end up with all their funky ammo and my rifle loves it.

Ah, so it's mainly tolerance for external conditions then? That makes sense.

Stuff that isn't the rifle. Ammo, gunk, etc.

Yes those matter, but it's also like comparing a 90's Chrysler LeBaron to a E30 BMW M3. The build quality, fit and finish etc don't compare.

Same with rifles. Some recievers may as well be pot metal, whereas others, like BCM or DD for example are nice genuine forged aluminum, with excellent machining and QC. Even BCM's blemished stuff is nicer than say the M&P Sport rifles.

Good tolerances make for a smooth functioning rifle with less jams or malfunctions.

Adams Arms makes some quality stuff. And if you have money to spend on things to improve your AR, I would look into getting a high quality compensator. It will help with recoil and flip big time. A good one makes shooting a 5.56 feel like a .22lr

My first ar. Looking to do a different handguard, stock, grip and simple red dot. Anybody have a preference for online stores and brands that won't break the bank?

Congrats! Kinda depends on what all you are looking for as far as budget and quality are concerned. However, I would suggest getting signed up for Palmetto State Armory’s mailing list. They send out daily deals that can sometimes be a real bargain. Not too long ago I picked up a set of mbus front and rear sights for under $50 shipped. They have deals on magazines pretty often too. I grabbed 7 mags for my AK and a nice carrying case for $80 if I remember right. I’m sure you’ll find plenty of things you’ll want to add or swap out. NDZ Performance also has some pretty decent customizable parts too as well as ODIN Works. Get your wallet ready!
