I posted a week or so ago talking about my 1800 mile trip with trailer in tow. Well, I ended up being a few pounds over weight at 6800 and some change. Details below.

55-60 mph, averaged 10.5 to 11.5 mpg depending on inclines

65-70 mph, averaged 8 to 8.5 mpg depending on inclines.

The Anderson WDH proved invaluable, wouldn't consider the long haul without it. Well worth the money and quite as a mouse.

P3 BRAKE controller, very valuable and very useful especially for people cutting you off and in stop and go traffic.

I could tell the trailer was behind me every step of the way but the truck made light work of it. Averaged 4700 rpms going 70 and 2700 rpms when going 55 to 60 mph. Going up steep inclines the truck would bog down and hit 5500 rpms but continue up hills and mountains with ease. With all of this, I wouldn't say the truck struggled, more like it worked hard and performed admirably. Temperature gauges always stayed well within range. If doing this again I would have no worries using the truck. If doing this for a living, a tundra or full size truck would be a must.

TIPS
Buy towing mirrors, I never did and wish I would have. Picture attached.
Don't miss any gas stations when at a quarter tank. I used my 5 gal fuel can and made a 95 mile stretch running on fumes.

 

thats the biggest single reason I bought the F250. 38 gallon tank, wooot. and 17MPG towing on diesel, double WOOT.

If you tow quite a bit or just want the capabilities, it's worth the investment. Aside from that, the price you pay for fuel, having a diesel and the maintenance just doesn't justify the buy. Heavy duty trucks definitely make light work of these loads though.

 

diesel at the local costco is $3.399 today, thats cheaper than the premium gas my 1990s mercedes uses. and the ford 7.3 requires a whole lot less $$$$$ repairs than the newer engines.

 

Luxury model vehicles and sports cars will require that fuel. However, for the average vehicle 85 works fine. Your 7.3, although a great engine isn't the typical diesels sold today that require DEF, and numerous add ins for emissions. Depending on your make and model, you can still many things without a dealer.....though I must say that toyota and Honda have built their reputation on reliability. For many others, I have to agree with repairs being costly....then again, 100 plus is typical for an hourly rate.

7.3l is in my opinion one of the last greatest diesels along with cummins

 

yeah, around here, shop rate at the better shops has crept up to like $120-130/hour :-/
