Do you have any pics on where you’re at with it?

X2 on the breather hose. Mine was disconnected and was letting water in. I used a little rtv to keep it in place.

Do you know where the other end of that breather goes?

    Thanks for the answer.

Please excuse me, I have not had time to get under the truck.
But I can tell you that I opened the rear actuator, the guides were a bit rusty, I cleaned them and now the gear travel is perfectly heard when I press the 4WD button (the next time I open it I will take pictures, although they are very similar to those you photographed).

My concern is that although it makes the journey when I press the button 4wd, the front axle is still free. I expected the front shaft to connect to the rear shaft when the gear rotated. Is that correct?
Mine does not do it, that's why I wanted to remove the complete actuator, but I do not know if it is necessary to do so.

Now, with respect to the front actuator, there is no movement when I press the 4wd, but I do not know if it is because it has some dependence to connect the front shaft.

By the way, the light of the 4wd of the board does not turn on when activating the 4wd or when I deactivate it.

    I appreciate your comments.

    I have made this test:
I removed the switch from the actuator, then I reconnected the wires.
I pressed the 4WD button and the drive actuator motor was activated (the problem is that 4wd not engage), however the front differential actuator was not activated.

Then, without deactivating the 4WD button, I manually pressed the switch and at that moment the actuator of the front difference was activated.

    * My diagnosis is that the bar that must be pushed by the transmission actuator is stuck.

My question is whether it is advisable to remove the complete piece of the actuator from the transmission, or it is an activity that is not recommended.

Trapperr, You have been the only one I have seen (picture) that has removed that place in the Tacoma 1st generation.

I have removed the 4x4 actuator on the transfer case.

If I have to remove it again I will be careful
    1. to note the orientation of the large gear inside
    2. to note the orientation of the rack (rod with gear teeth) inside that the gear meshes with.
    3. to NOT push the 4x4 button while removed.

I think there is probably a FSM procedure for reinstalling it, but I couldn't find it. I had to guess a few times to see how it worked when installed.

    Thanks Both Trapperr and MartinDWhite
    I have fixed It.

I removed the gear, remove the spring and the piece seemed to be part of the whole, as welded.
Then with a small lever I started moving a little to one side and to the other, I added DW-40 to help it loose.
I repeated the operation about 10 times until It finally made the journey freely.

Note: 2 days ago I had cleaned the lid and again it was full of water. The hose is not broken, but I suspect that the water gets in through some connection, I will apply silicon.

I am very happy with my 4x4 running again.
