Looks like I’m moving the IT route!

Just started my CCNA training and I’m looking for suggestions on practice hardware for my home network. I’m totally new to this side of it, but I’d say I’m good with computers/technology in general. Thanks in advance!

Search ebay for CCNA startlab if you want hardware.

For software based look at GNS3.

Really there is no need for a hardware lab for CCNA Routing and Switching
My wife did all of her studying for CCIE using GNS3.
She almost passed but after 3 attempts (which is the average amount of times to take it) with each attempt being out of pocket and having our second child she halted her quest for CCIE.
She still holds her CCNP though.

    Thanks for the help!

I read that only 3% of people pass that exam. Nuts!

I have a couple of friends that are CCIE
I have hired a handful of CCIEs that just sucked.

I was working toward a CCIE in DataCenter but never took the lab and my career path changed to IT management.

    Yeah.
Wondering, was the interviewer a man or woman? It's possible it was a test to see how you would react. But no, I would never make a comment like that, I have had that beaten out of me by required yearly training, year after year, company after company. You could have replied with, "Well, I tend to be pretty mellow and caring, my online name is bongwhisperer." LOL, sorry, had to do it.

Not anymore on the Cisco certificate path.
It used to be you needed CCNA R&S before you could do anything related to Voice, Video, Data Center, Security, etc...

Now each track is stand alone and you have :
    CCNA R&S
    CCNA Data Center
    CCNA Wireless
    CCNA Collaboration
    etc ...

My interviewer was a female. I thought about that as well, I thought maybe she asked that to see how I would respond.

When she did say that, I replied with "is it because females are more empathetic?" I've never read any case studies or anything of that nature that says females are better help desk people.

If I got the job, i'd figure the statement was made to illicit a response from me to possibly see my "true colors," so to speak, but that type of statment is a slippery slope, there are better ways to test someone's personality without subjecting your self to a sexual discrimination claim.

Also, I have 13 years in the industry in which I applied to, doing what the job description asked for. I just don't have a vagina.

“Is being a woman part of the job requirement? I believe my skill set exceeds the relevant requirements that have been shared with me.”

My guess is that it’s a smaller company and you weren’t being interviewed by someone from HR? As an interviewee, it’s your responsibility to protecc ya neck. Keep the interview on track and passively let them know you won’t put up with BS comments/questions like that with your redirected responses.

Not a small company, that's what surprised me. They have annualized revenues of 500MM.

Maybe I should have said that, but it was an interview and I was trying to out my best foot forward.

    Yeah.
I don't think you would want to work for or with her. That size of company is "in between" and obviously doesn't have the leadership/training/controls in place to avoid behavior like that. A larger company would typically have more than one manager in the room, or HR, and their people would be trained on appropriate interview questions and behavior. Sounds like she wanted to hire a woman, and you would be a fish out of water and a target for anything bad that happened. The phrase "too big for their britches" comes to mind. Move on and don't worry about it.

That kind of statement is completely out of line, period. But there isn't a lot to do about it. If you want the job, it does give you a clue that your manager is going to be an idiot.

It also opens up the possibility for a whole new thread, what was the stupidest question you've ever been asked in an interview? I was once asked "if you could be a forest animal what would it be?" The only way to answer that is with a BS answer which is exactly what they got.
