More info on your moonroof

 

It's the factory moonroof that comes on the 18' Tacoma OR...It pops up and also slides open. When it's popped up I see it hitting those bars, right?

 

I'm not sure how far it pops up, but it should be fine regardless of where the bars are mounted. You could email them and ask, or if you measure how far your sunroof comes up above the roof line I could measure it for you. I have a second gen but i'm sure there isn't much difference.

If the window does hit the bars, you could move the crossbars such that they are not in the way.

I have the 70" Yakima Corebar. I like it so far. It goes on and comes off easy. Plenty wide enough for my solo canoe and a kayak. It overhangs the cab but its just high enough that i dont hit my head.

You can put a locking cargo box or cargo rack on it

 

I was lucky and came across a "dent and ding" Warrior Products rack on Craigslist for $100 with all the mounting hardware. They rate it for 450/500lbs static load, or 250lbs if you're going to be doing trail riding with the weight going up and down.

So far it has been pretty beastly, we had it completely loaded for a float trip (probably close to 350-400lbs) and it didn't show any signs of use. I will say it's a bit noisy without a fairing, but the radio drowns it out pretty easy.

Only thing I wasn't super thrilled about was the drip rail moldings. I'm not sure if there is a better way, but I basically had to cut out the section for the roof rack with a razor blade and dykes and double side tape most of it back down.

 

I haven't done anything to my weather molding yet. I just removed it from the front of the cab to about 6in from where it meets the back window. Silicone all around the bolts of course so I'm not too worried about the water. I thought about cutting some smaller pieces for in between the bolts just haven't done it.

 

I'm pretty sure the threaded sections in the roof aren't open to the interior so water wasn't much of a concern for me. My thoughts were appearance, it didn't look quite right with the molding completely removed.

 

I wanted to keep the strips as intact as possible in case I need to take the rack off. I might see if I can order another set of moldings and cut those. I do recommend the air dam though:

 

They are basically nutserts so yes they are completely open to the interior/headliner. It’s why you’ll see a complaint thread here or there regarding the OEM rack and an improper dealer/user install leading to water coming down the A-pillars and getting the headliner wet. It’s also why the OEM rack comes with those sealing washers or whatever they are.

Any roof rack installed on a double cab Tacoma using factory mounting locations needs sealer for each bolt to be 100% waterproofed.

 

I've dealt without it for a little more than a year and half now, if I wasn't in the process of trying to sell the truck I would probably be fabbing my own.

Have yet to have issues with mine, but you're right, it did come with crush washers for mounting so that would probably be why. I never bothered to look down the holes or drop the headliner, just figured Toyota wouldn't expose it directly to the interior.

 

Yeah it’s the reason the non-racked trucks have tape covering the holes.

I'm also looking at the OEM rack for the double cab. It looks very easy to install, and the biggest item I'll be lugging about is a 56lb 16' long canoe. One "ladder rack" type rack that bolts into the bedrails should suffice for supporting the entire length of the canoe.
My question for those with the OEM rack already installed - any recommendations for a hardshell, aerodynamic storage box to mount using the OEM crossbars for trips where I don't take the canoe? Does Thule or Yakima make boxes that fit the dimensions of this OEM rack?

Being a newbie to the forum, I'm not sure if I should post my basket installation question here or start a new thread? But here goes:
The Yakima basket support brackets fit perfectly under the front cross bars, but they are about an inch off on the back. It's cranked down and feels secure, but it's definitely not perfect. Is there a step I missed or custom bracket I can get that fits better? Or should I roll with it and relax?
