I'm in the market for a Toyota Tacoma Access Cab and came across one on Craigslist earlier today. Here's the listing: https://phoenix.craigslist.org/wvl/cto/d/2006-toyota-tacoma-trd/6563278402.html

The miles are low for the year. Do you see any red flags with this ad? Anything I should be concerned about? How about specific questions I should ask when I view the truck later this week? Thanks in advance for the feedback.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I like it but consider two grand in maintenance coming up so if you can get it for a little less money that might be nice. Ask if he’s ever changed the rear end oil

05 - 06 had a head gasket issue leaks between cylinder 5 and/or 6. Issue comes up anywhere between 80k to 280k miles. My truck 129k miles is going through this right now at the dealer $2,816 + tax & supplies. Extended warranty through our credit union is covering the cost of the repair.

Thank you for the feedback. I really appreciate it and will ask if he's changed the rear end oil. What other big ticket items would I be looking at maintenance wise? I currently have an FJ Cruiser and am used to doing most maintenance myself, so it seems like there's quite a few similarities between these two vehicles.

I currently have 4wd on my 2007 FJ Cruiser and have only had to use it once. I'm not even sure that counts though since I intentionally put myself in a situation to where I knew I'd have to use it lol

Yikes! That is very concerning. I have had literally nothing go wrong on my FJ Cruiser and it has 135k miles on the odometer. Just routine maintenance. This is making me think twice. Any idea what percentage of the 2005 and 2006 models have this issue occur? Like are we talking 10% or 3 out of every 4 vehicles?

assuming it's been in Phoenix its whole life you're probably ok, but I'd check the frame out thoroughly though for rust, just in case

I'd say its worth a look then. As mentioned, watch out for head gasket issues.

I love my '05. I've got a mew motor with 1200 miles on it though, so I wont have to worry about the head gasket.

Thank you for the input. Does this issue happen to ALL 2005 and 2006 Tacoma's or just a small percentage? Either way, seems like a gamble and might make more sense for me to focus on 2007's and newer. Thoughts?

Not sure on the percentage of trucks that have issues with it. I'd imagine if you baby the motor its less likely to happen

Seems like a good price, low miles. Get a full mechanical inspection incl. Compression check if your worried about major repair. Brakes, Sepentine belt, spark plugs etc all need attention around 100k miles. All fluids too.

    Ps, also ask for carfax
