I'm convinced this is a terrible fix perpetuated by those that want a cheap cure, that essentially masks the issue. Yes I realize plenty have done it, but some of those plenty have detonated engines as well. Our ECUs are dumbfucks, they have no real knowledge that said they are very accurate and if fed the right information they can make an informed decision. A GM knock sensor doesn't resonate at the right frequency and because it isn't feeding a knock signal to the ECU it will allow more timing advance, but we risk having inaudible knock go unnoticed as well which won't pull timing when it actually needs to for engine safety. Knock resonance seems to primarily be a function of bore size and the GM sensors everyone is recommending belong to engines that have much larger bores and in some cases resonate at over twice the frequency of the Toyota OEM sensor. If we had really nice fancy cars with flat curve knock sensors that used a much smarter computer to determine minor vs major knock based on intensity then this wouldn't be an issue. Instead we have an old calculator programmed to add up occurrences of voltage being passed along, if you alter the resonance point at which this "sensor" passes voltage your not doing yourself any favors. The computer is unaware that you were fucking with a sensor it expects to act a certain way and cannot account for a sensor that behaves differently so you skew its usefulness and essentially negate its purpose.

Well hate to break it to you but getting a piggy back and altering the timing with that...is no different. haha At least in terms of what the ECU is "hearing". Thats the point of a timing controller anyways right? Stock ECU is dumb and extremely over cautious and the stock sensors are overly sensitive.

This thread is pretty nice to explain why the GM sensor: http://www.customtacos.com/forum/13-performance/184210-knock-sensor-anyone-use-ks46.html

Swapping the sensor isn't a bad thing like youre making it out to be. Its actually a more superior sensor. Thats why its worth the swap. It feeds a better signal to the ECU than the stock one and it actually operates very closely to the OEM frequency.

Granted this is for the 5vzfe but its still a good choice for the 2/3rz. And its a sensor made for a 2.2L..which is smaller than both motors so not sure where you got that part from.

Either way, its not going to fix your problem or mine alone. It does need to be combined with a timing controller and that I think will net the best results. Just about everyone on here with a turbo install is running the GM sensors and an FIC6 to modify fuel and timing. Makes for a great affordable tuning combo really.

You're forgetting that a timing controller isn't a dumb blanket device though and can perform these adjustments in certain ranges where detonation is unlikely or at least less likely. I'll happily link you too the 30 odd threads about these knock sensors and their poor fit to Toyotas. I've read all the CustomTacos threads on it, not one person there seems to really have any idea what they're doing when they change the sensor, just that it cured an issue that is most likely caused by something else in their tune. I talked to Gadget about this today too, he seems to think that unless the sensor is actually broken you need to solve the knock with proper fuel tuning and ignition. A more robust sensor it may be, but that doesn't change that it resonates at the wrong frequency. It is super easy for me to try one of these sensors, takes maybe three minutes to change it. But I don't really want to get into an engine rebuild from ping that was already detected fine by my stock sensor. The whole reason people thought GM sensors was a good idea was because MR2 guys did it to avoid paying $125 for a new Denso or Matsushita OEM sensor for their 3S-GTE engines. There are plenty of guys there that went back to OEM sensors after they corrected their tunes and noticed less issues afterward. Also you missed where I said "BORE SIZE" overall displacement isn't the issue with the sensor size match.

Eh, at this point since I'll have to get a FIC or FTC1 it seems wasteful because the SC is only efficient to like 10psi. So yeah turbo would be cool, wondering if now isn't the perfect time to try a Microsquirt though, then sell the SC once I have the basics of that dialed. The SC is predictable which is nice for a beginner tuner hah. Then turbo should be no issue haha

thats true. The PnP megasqurit would be way freakin better literally in every way. And would be easy to get it tuned up with the SC...huh maybe I should just do that..Be a good place for you to start though.

Yeah it is tempting, I could totally leave it how it is now too and be fine. It is much faster than before and the retarded timing isn't a constant issue.

I plan on replacing the whole CV assembly on each side. I cannot justify rebooting when the old ones have 160k miles.
I will look into the high angle CVs and dif drop kit to see which one makes more sense. Hell, I may need both. The 882 provided more lift than I thought.

I just added a front plate bumper and it helped reduce the angle a lot. I forgot to take measurements before in my excitement to get it on.
I am also shopping for a winch. Hopefully that will get enough weight over the front axle.

I find it annoying as it always happens when I don't want it too. Same with ping. So I need to address it for sure. Might just do the megasquirt. Cheaper than most options and way freaking better. Might hold of on that for a bit though as I have enough projects on Frank right now. Will do Meth first.

Weird part is I have no audible ping, timing is done on a counter too. Everytime it knockes it goes to 1 degree and counts up over time. Sometimes it just hauls ass.

Thats whats super annoying about mine. No audible ping/knock. Just timing being pulled and then building back up.
