If you haven’t done it already Floyd, make yourself an axle pulling cable.

I always knocked them out with a pry bar and it worked great.

THEN... I broke my first axle on a trail and realized I couldn’t get the damned thing out with the 85lb 1/4” skid plate in place.

I took Jon’s advice and made this cable last weekend. Then, I discover that my passenger side outer CV was very tight. So, I tested the cable method. Two swings and the CV was out.

Only a few dollars to make and takes up hardly any space.

    Naw. Thanks tho.

I already have a bunch of bike carrying options for my other cars. The truck has a different challenge: the rear tire/swingout gets in the way of carrying a bike in the back either by a rack similar to your offer, or a receiver mounted rack.

Oooh. That’s an easy cable to make.
    How long is it?

I don’t know. I think I bought 10’ of cable, then just made it as long as it needed to be. I can measure it next time I’m in my truck tools.

Im guessing it just needs to be long enough to wrap around the inner part of the axle and enough clearance to swing a sledge?

    What diameter cable?

    EDIT: 3/16”

Small loop on the axle end. Big enough loop on the hammer end to easily get the handle through. I made the loop on the axle end as small as possible while still being able to get the bigger loop and clamps through it. This way, you get more contact with the axle. Use two clamps for each loop.

Loop the cable through itself in a noose around the back of the inner axle. Pull it tight, slip the hammer handle in the other end, swing, rotate 180*, swing again. Repeat as necessary.

    Thanks Jimmy.

@stairgod - what cable diameter do you recommend?

According to my calipers, it’s 3/16”

I bought it a while ago. Just got around to doing it this past weekend. I remember now that I couldn’t remember what size Jon said he used. I just bought what seemed right.

    It worked.

Great. I’ll put it together this weekend and use it in the garage for my CV install. This’ll be good practice for possible future field use.

    Thanks again!

Think mine is 1/4". But 3/16" is more than strong enough, and will be more flexible.

Ive got one of those CV things made out of synthetic winch line from southeast overland from my secret santa, haven't gotten to use it but it seems handy

Steering Rack - try the lucas stop leak. It seems to have all but solved my issue.

Bike rack fab - I wanted to put a hitch on my swingout but I don't trust the hinge with the weight of 2 bikes, and a heavy rack. I designed some rail mounted ones (see my build thread for pics) but I am waiting till I start my new side gig to just make them myself. that way I can trial and error for the cost of time and scrap materials.

If anyone needs, I have two Thule 594's in my garage I'm not using. I'll let them go cheap.
