Honestly, no. We just had this same conversation if you look up a few posts, or back a page or so. These bikes are both good for getting a taste for it, but you will not be able to upgrade the bike at all to modern parts. It would be beneficial to just get out and spend a few more dollars to a bike that you can use to get in to mountain bikes, and upgrade as you progress. There are a ton of options in the $1,000 dollar range.

    https://www.commencalusa.com/Mobile/meta-ht-am-origin-650b-red-2018-c2x23712343

I know this bike is a bit more than you might be looking to spend, but this bike will be more than enough for you, and it will allow you to upgrade parts as you need to, which won’t be for a while. The bikes at Dick’s are metal coil spring shocks instead of air shocks, outdated gearing and geometry... they will not be accurate to what mountain biking is. Those bikes are good for taking to a campground and riding around a lake on a paved path, and little more.

Also look up ghost bikes at REI, the Kato I think is the hardtail. They usually are priced pretty fair. Or check pink bike and grab a used bike for a good deal.

Totally disagree with that. I’ve been on plenty of bikes, and the 2017 Trance advanced 1 I rode was stupid fun. It’s all in the setup.
I still have many personal bests on up, down, and flow trails on that bike, and I only had it 5 months.
He only thing it didn’t handle well was steeper, rougher sections where it would be a bit upset.
After that bike I decided on a Devinci Troy, which is less playful, slower going up and across, but has more “plow factor.” It’s still super fun, and I have zero doubts it’ll be a long termer, but the Trance was 3 lbs lighter and super agile.
Perhaps those reviews were of the Reign, which is definitely not as playful, and is a beast going down

Either way, the 140mm range is a great all around bike.

The Trance right before I sold it.

Just wanted to say it somewhere, and I don't use social media so here it is for all of you:

I registered for my first Enduro race. May 12. Will be a 4 stage race with a total of `1500m of vertical climb. I hope I don't die.

Are you sure on that 1500m vert? That's almost 5000 feet of elevation gain. If so, bless your soul, you better be in shape

100% sure. I ride 4 days per week right now averaging 8-900m of vertical every ride so I'm somewhat prepared for the climbing, it's the super tech downs I'm more concerned about.

Sounds like a sick race! Around here our dainty-ass enduro races are so downhill focused a lot of the times you can walk up the climb stage and still be within timing. So all these bros end up wearing a full-face and essentially walking the climbs. No reward for being an all-around solid rider.

That's going to be a great time

Yeah it will. I’m really looking forward to it. Around here (Kamloops, BC) quite a few people are serious about their climbs and the overall “all mountain” experience.

Those who DH do more shuttle / park riding and they have enough of their own events they don’t need to clog up the enduro days.

Strava is most popular for tracking rides, but I like MTB Project best for trail maps. You can download by state and still get gps signal for navigating with the app when there’s no cell service. I’d just buy a solid biking computer to mount on your bars if you want something dedicated and more accurate.

Mount some universal Yakima tracks directly to your truck rails or call retrax as they were suppose to have something by now that you can install on your current cover to accomplish this. The mobtown off-road bed rack may be compatible too.

It was of the reign. I've wanted a reign for the longest time. Now I've been smitten by the ibis mojo 3 or hd4. I just want to find a great all around bike. Pedaling doesn't need to be the best in my view just cant seem like a chore.

Any TX skinny-wheelers doing the Tres Amigos Challenge in Dublin? I'm stuck in training until Memorial Day but I'm going to see if I can throw down some stationary bike training rides to try and build a base before the 66 miler. It would be fun to have some company out there.

I hear that, and I was all-aboard the enduro train for awhile too. I hate pedaling, and live for the downs. But after spending a season on both enduro (Devinci Spartan 160mm) and all mountain (Giant Trance 140mm) bikes, I was sold on the all mountain category. I put 1500 miles on the Spartans and 1200 miles on the Trance.
140mm bikes with modern geo (long, low, slack) can handle crazy terrain, and are stupid fast on the downs. It’s not the uphill that sold me, it’s their agility. They are way more fun. Get up to speed faster, pop better, they look for lips and transitions, snappy handling, and just have that silly fun factor.
The enduro rigs are so much closer to my Giant Glory in handling. Fast as hell, but just roll everything. Kinda like a hold on and point it bike. They don’t find lips and transitions, they create them. They’re super fun as park bikes, but if you have to pedal to your fun, they’re a chore. And they don’t have that whippet handling.
Your coin, but definitely try them out for a day if you can. It’s worth renting one, it’ll save you tons of money by finding the bike that’s right for your riding and your terrain.
In all, the enduro rigs are like a bear, slow and lumbering until they get rowdy, then it’s powerful and mean, and will maul the terrain. The AM bike is like a happy dog, playful and ready to jump around and smile at everything at a moments notice.

Tailgate down. Shoves in the bed and I use a short piece of rope. Tie a trucker hitch off of one of the points by the tailgate and some point of the bike. I can load in or out in under 5 seconds.

I consider bikes like the Giant Reign, Santa Cruz Nomad, Devinci Spartan to be more of a mini dh bike category as I agree they don’t pedal very well relative to modern geo all mountain bikes. I see the enduro category as bikes that pedal really well like the transition Patrol, Yeti SB6, SC Bronson. However, the Giant Trance and Devinci Troy are incredible 140mm travel all mountain bikes that really do it all better than anything else and you can still have fun at a bike park with them. those big bikes like the spartan soak everything up until your going Mach speed and are definitely a chore to pedal or walk up steep technical sections vs something else that is super fun and lively at all speeds.
