Noob question

Hi All,

I am the proud new owner of a 2016 SR5 4X4 V6. This is my first truck, let alone Tacoma.

I have what is probably a weird question and I am not even sure if I am getting the terms right.

The one feature of the truck I don't like is that it has a running board/side step (some sites call it a "nerf bar") installed. I'm pretty tall (6'3") so I don't need this.

Removing it seems as simple as just unbolting it.

However, I have now watched a few videos of installing these things and all of them start with the removal of OEM plastic screws/bolts designed I guess to protect the nerf bar mounting bolt holes and keep moisture out.

Does anyone know where or how one can buy plastic these plastic screws/bolts so that I can replace them when I remove the nerf bard? Or what they are called?

You could always just re-thread the bolts back in.

 

Just hit the bolt holes/threads with a bit of rustoleum paint to discourage rust.

 

Here is some horrible advice (Be warned, its HORRIBLE ADVICE)
Find plastic screws with the same thread type and length and plug them with some loctite

 

Don't put loctite on plastic screws lol. When you go to take it out youll break the head off the plastic screw and you'll be screwed

 

Sorry I should have clarified. I'm assuming this is a permanent type deal? So, as to not make another point to rust, I suggested plastic screws and a pretty permanent applicational adhesive

I'd go with putting the bolts back in or if you want to sell the steps and include the bolts with the sale, I wouldn't worry about it or I'd jam a trim clip into it.

This is horrible advice. Why would anyone want to permanently glue them shut? What are the advantages? I'd rather just leave them open rather than doing that.

OP - you can also tape them shut as well. Probably some gorilla tape cut to size would do the trick. Or like others said, just reinstall the bolts (put some anti-seize on the threads)

 

welcome to the forum and the world of owning Toyota trucks..to answer your question, you could also put a small dab of silicone caulk in the holes and if you ever needed them, you could use a small center punch or nail to push the caulk out..i have done this in the past and it works great.

Even though you might not need them to get in and out, they'll still prevent door dings. I also find it necessary when washing or waxing my truck and I'm tall also.

 

I have steps on mine. I dont need them, but wifey does.

 

You could try calling a local dealer and see how much they would charge, or if you sell the steps locally ask the person buying if they wouldn't mind you taking the plastic plugs off their hands.
