I have seen several threads about the e-locker diffs doing that. Some have been blaming ECGS and what not. I try to explain what is really happening but many aren't receptive they want to blame set up which would cause other issues. E-lockers seem to be more prevalent due to the smaller ring gear than the opens but it happens in both. Tacomas are not the only ones plagued with this issue.

    ^^^^^^This!!!!!

Or a Dana 60 out of a super duty or dodge 3/4 ton! If you really want to get crazy get the Dana 90 out of a F350 dually or Dana 135 out of a F450/550. The Dana 90 is a little stonger than the 14 bolt has an inch larger ring gear.

But it's not a larger ring gear. The pinion # and bearing truss are the differences.

But that link you showed doesn't cover the 05 and up it's only the earlier diffs. or at least what I saw scanning through it. I'm going to research some more. They also have some of the dimensions off from what I have found in other sources. More research to find the answer in this debacle of ring gear carnage.

And interesting that the 3rd gen is based off the V6/Turbo 8" with 4 pinion design.

I need to do more reading on it also, but I've seen in several places that the 8.4/8.25" ring gear size is false (even on the newer models). To me, the larger bearing truss would have more effect than .40" larger diameter ring gear. But that said, I can't imagine the deflection needed to jump and shear a tooth at the root like we saw last weekend.

Your stress concentration factor is a part of this equation as well, seeing as the gear is hi cycle. Add some deflection, point loading, coupled with the stress concentration....any big deviation from base design could cause failure. That can be said for any design though, maybe it's simply not robust enough. Material, fit, Tacoma drivers.... Also, I'd say it fractured, not sheared (as in no plastic deformation).
