Hmmmm... Good points. I'll have to take another look at the pictures I have of the missing teeth. Based on 3.73 & 4.56 sets on Nitro's site, the 4.56 pinion has 9 teeth, vs the 3.73 with 11. Ring gear has same tooth count for both R&P. I am in no way experienced with gears!

Jimbo's first ring had probably double the miles on it that the second one did.

Smaller the ring gear ratio the stronger it will be. That's why most buggy racers that have 600+ HP run 3.73s stock gears. It's only a matter of time before my 5.13s go

Deflection is part of it but what @themadzapflasher said has more to do with it being point loading and then add some deflection into it. Also if there is any contamination or poor casting area that creates a weak spot. I am definitely going to delve into this some more. Jumping or major deflection doesn't really cause breakage like that it chips and chews the gears up like they went through an industrial blender or from what I have seen and experienced.

Looking at the pics that I have seen from Tim and Jimbo I saw more fracturing than shearing which to me denotes a weak casting only having one good point of structure to hold the tooth which is where the shear happened. But I think you are correct in your assessment there.

If it's just the # of teeth difference in the pinion then the strength of the tooth on the ring gears for both gear sets is the same.

I wonder - do we see the same failures in the non e-locker 8"?

And yeah, I guess I should have not used shear having looked at the pics now.

They did shear some but not a lot compared to the pics I have seen if you have more post them up!

I have not seen the reports like I have with the e-lockers but there are some.

    Because I was inverted
Technically a fracture failure is a shear failure, but not in the plastic deformation sense of the phrase. I edited my post to point this out.

They torqued my oil filter drain bolt on so fucking tight, I can no longer get it off. It just turns the entire oil filter. So when I change my oil, oil explodes everywhere when pulling the filter. Stupid Mother fuckers.

I just go to the dealer and make them look it up. I buy them there and the oil filter since it’s not really any more expensive than getting them elsewhere

3rd gen problems or canister style filter problems at least yours has a drain bolt some vehicles with canisters don't have them and make a mess. Also over time eventually they just leak from the drain bolt or at least the VWs do.
