Before you go ape-shit about the diff, just make sure you have the plastic plugs in the holes on the bottom of your front A-arms. My truck made a similar noise at similar speeds. I covered the holes with masking tape as a test, and voila....noise gone. Toyota has the “OEM” hole filler plugs in order for me.

It’s easy to check, and there a small chance that is your issue.

Mind linking the parts? I've tried looking em up via the TSB PDF but didn't have any luck as mine is an SR5 model and these appeared to only be for the TRD's.

    Thanks!

Huh, not what the TSB calls for, but new springs are new springs! Haha what about the rest of the TSB parts?

no idea.. just know what they told me on the phone.. not sure if they said a spring or both springs were being replaced..

was surprised that they actually changed the oil in it..lol i did print he section of the manual out that said what was needed if the truck was used for towing and gave it to them.. highly doubt they tightened suspension and body bolts like the sheet says to do..

I just don't get it, SR5's are making the same exact noise but it only applies to TRD's because they have a bigger diff? I call bullshit. They're treating TRD's with more care because those are higher selling trucks.

You're lucky, you have a nice dealer. My dealership told me the noise was "a common, normal" noise that didn't have anything to do with the rear diff or springs. My buddy is a mechanic and has his own shop, told me to bring the truck by, he'll check it out and write up a paper saying it's not normal and needs to be addressed.

yea that sucks they won't take care of yours..

i could barley hear the hum at times but it was there and figured at the 5000 service that i'd list it to get them to look at it.. i don't use the truck so it can sit at the dealer for a week if need be..lol

i also listed that the seat sounds like a plastic shoprite bag when you adjust yourself in it and the trans seems confused.

they said the trans seemed fine. that a lot of people have complained about it since it went to drive by wire. she said maybe i'm just not used to it.. that may just be the case but at least its on record now.

they said they couldn't duplicate the seat noise.. i told them they need to drive it a while and adjust them-self in it. they said they would try that today..

they said they duplicated the rear hum and that there was a tsb on it so they are replacing the spring or springs.. i was surprised they were gonna do it..

so we will see when i get it back if it still hums or not...

not sure why i even said anything because i already decided i'm not keeping it when the lease is up. i want something with a V8 and larger gas tank..

Yeah, the Toyota TFS that looked at my SR5 said it’s the same noise as the TRDs, but nothing they can do. It has nothing to do with differential size per the shop manager. They all can do it. The TRDs are way more popular than than the rest so makes sense to start with those. Double cabs sell the most so TRD double cabs it is. My dealer said they have had some access cabs come in with terrible howls, but they aren’t on the list either.

ok little update... the parts were backordered so they didn't repair the hum..

they also said they they aren't actually replacing the springs like they said on the phone yesterday.. some pad is being put between the leaves. supposed to call me when the parts are in.

    ok so another update...

so april 3rd i took the truck in for service and mentioned the whine in the rear.. they looked at it and said yes its making noise. they were gonna put some pads or some shit in there as per the TSB. turns out the parts were back ordered. no big deal call me when they are in..

dropped the truck off last night and just got it back today.. they put new springs on it.. when i asked about the tsb saying just spring pads or something she said the tsb says if you put the pads in and it still whines they need to put new springs in it.. i said and you happened to have the springs in stock? no they ordered the springs incase the pads didn't work.. personally i thing they said screw it and just put sprigs on it.. fine by me because i'd be pissed if they put pads in and it still did the same thing and i had to take it back again..

so on my double cab offroad long bed they replaced the rear springs..

No. The sports got recalled for leaky rear ends, plenty of OR mdels also had leaky rear ends, including mine. Yet OR trucks never got a recall or even a tsb about it. It took me months to get it addressed. It's just the way it goes, toyota isn't practicing class warfare.

Well I'm almost at my 20k service so I'm going to bring it up again and demand that one of them ride with me, so I can call them on their bullshit when they try to claim they "could not replicate the noise." Because now, I get the noise anywhere between 15-60 mph and it's really starting to piss me off. It might sound petty, but I'm not paying $433 a month with extra protection on the truck to hear a fucking noise that drowns out my radio when it's turned up to 45-50. I have the SR5 Model, so I'll probably have to haggle with them a bit.

They didn't even drive my truck. Just ordered the parts. I was stunned they ordered parts and even more stunned when I checked the paperwork and saw my truck had 1 more mile on it when I picked it up vs. dropping it off.

Good luck! I’ve tried two different dealers about my rear diff howl and so far nothing. They are sticking to it being normal for our SR5’s. Some on here are just fixing it themselves which is the route I’ll be taking this next week. Sucks, but I have a 2018 SR5. They haven’t even released a TSB for all the 2016-2017s yet. I can’t wait another 2 or 3 years for them to maybe include my rig lol I’m just going to do it myself and hope it shuts it up some!
