Got the new bulbs in today, Volsa H9s with an H11 blacktop glare cap. H9s are more work to fit compared to the plug and play Flossers.

An internal tab needs to be trimmed in order to fit onto the harness plug. I used an exacto knife and a little patience to whittle down and remove the tab.

Then one of the external tabs on the steel mounting color needs to be trimmed to fit into the housing designed for H11 mounting tabs. I used a dremel with a cut off wheel. You can see where I accidentally nicked the seal.

Seeing the rating as pretty close to what I got before, I reran my last measurements of the Flossers.

H11 90w Flosser


Output actually appears nearly identical. So I tested operating temperature with my IR gun.
Volsa H9: 209 degrees
Flosser H11: 230 degrees

The big advantage with the H9s is at 65w they do not require a harness, unlike the 90w Flossers. Note that the testing done in this post was running on a standalone harness for maximum performance. If comparing Volsa caped H9s on the stock harness to Flosser H11s on the standalone harness, the Flossers would likely outproduce the Volsas.

The H9 is a high efficiency bulb with a higher precision filament than the high wattage Flossers. In theory this should result in better distance projection, though I have yet to do any night testing.

Your profile shows a 2007 Tacoma. The harness is for 2012+ trucks using H11 fogs. The brighter version for 2005-2011 trucks with H10s is:

The harness is going to improve output regardless of which bulbs are used.

What about 9155 bulbs?

 

Less efficient bulb. Higher power but less lumens than the H10. I believe the 9155 is about 950 lumens while the H10 is about 1000 lumens.

Definitely check out the 9011 thread for the H10 fogs.

 

I think it's hard to find an actual 9155 bulb. An H10 is supposed to be 42w. A 9145 (45w) is a common substitute. A 9155 is supposed to be 55w.

 

I'm just thinking outloud. My brief search of 9155 bulbs only turned up 9145 bulbs...

 

True, many sites sub them all together. But you can find anything online.

I went down that route when looking for options to the H10, initially seemed promising with higher wattage, but output wasn't there.

 

Updated thread OP with 2100 lumen Volsa glare capped H9 info, links to why Optilux are not recommended and suggestion of Nokya 75w H11 as an alternative 'other bulb' option.

 

I contacted Daniel Stern re volsa H11 with glare caps and he is not willing to sell for application in 2014 fog light. FYI

 

I was wondering if that would happen. You guys might think I get technically critical in evaluating lighting, he is drastically moreso.

Reasons
Foglights should only be run when needed, in heavy rain/snow/fog/dust when you really need the extra near field light to help guide you on the roadway. Foglights have a small shallow reflector, using a very intense bulb in the small lamp size is going to produce extremely high surface luminescence which is going to cause increased lens glare over stock. Not glare like an HID or LED as the beam pattern is still the same as stock, unlike changing the light source. That coupled with significantly increased foreground light causes peoples eyes to lose distance vision as their pupils constrict to the near field illumination, while at the same causing them to think they can see better than they actually can (as people naturally prefer near field illumination) giving the driver a false sense of security and ability of their visibility. Unfortunately the majority of people do not understand or practice correct use of their fog lights and instead run them as supplemental lighting all the time thus providing these negative effects to themselves and other motorists without benefit, this is true for stock fogs but is further amplified with higher power fogs.

That said, every foglight is different, some makes and models have better foglights than others. I haven't done a wide breath of different OEM lamp assembly testing but the 2012-2015 seem ok, they do a better job of beam and glare control than some other vehicles I have worked on where it is much more noticeable.

My primary use for fogs is crossing windy remote mountain highways in the snow after dark. The fogs are an invaluable tool for me as sometimes it can be difficult to find the edge of the roadway. I don't run them on the street as supplemental lighting.

 

Well, I have to admit I caved and skipped to the end as soon as I was able to confirm that this thread is not for my truck ...

So for a 2006... I take it the Yellow bulbs would not be a recommendation... So what is a good remedy without a harness if possible? I believe I saw that it was an H10 bulb...
