I'm running on 34's, so obviously quite heavy. Since doing the OV tune the power is much improved, and my next planned modification was a re-gear. Since getting more usable power out of the OV tune though, I'm debating using that $ towards bumper/winch instead.

For those that had OVtune first and then re-geared, did the re-gear significantly enhance drivability? How so, specifically? I still plan to re-gear at some point, I'm just a bit torn if I should do it now or in the future.

Can't speak to the combo of the tune and re-gear, but I'll say this: re-gearing after increasing tire size is the CORRECT thing to do. These trucks (auto trans) hunt for gears enough as it is, let alone with larger tires. Even if the power feels "OK" to you, you're under-geared with stock gears and bigger tires, so you're putting more stress on the engine and trans. Start adding more weight to the truck (bumper, winch, other mods) and it will get worse.

Just my $0.02. Every 4x4 I've ever lifted and put bigger tires on has been re-geared. Currently running 37s with 5.13s on our Jeep, and 33s with 4.88s on our Tacoma.

dont disagree that it's the right thing to do. the question is if after the OV tune the difference is as noticeable which would determine not if, but WHEN i do it

You will notice the weight of that bumper and winch

All depends on your tolerance level. Some people can and some people can’t.

I’ve had a pedal commander, shift sense, gears, and ov tune. All different combos. Along with 33’s, 35’s, and 37’s.

I was perfectly happy with 35’s, stock gears, and heavy skids/bumpers. Some people can’t handle 33’s without a regear.

For me gears were one of the last mods I did. And my truck is heavily modified. If I could go back I would still do it in the same order. Well maybe skip the mild build levels inbetween.

I re-geared first and then added the OV tune. The gears alone made the truck really drive a lot better! But when adding the tune with the gears it was a complete transformation!!! Made my truck came alive and its a so much fun to drive now! 33's lots of weight full set of steel skids, front slimline winch bumper, Northstar heavy ass battery, Bamf rack with RTT .

Just my 2 cents. Adding a bumper winch is gonna put a lot of weight up front. Around 120lbs for streamline bumper/winch and 180lbs for full bumper/winch. You are absolutely going to feal it on take off. To give an example I took my steal skid 60lbs off 2 weeks ago until I put on my aluminum one. I immediatly felt speedier and lighter. Now imagine 180lbs. So if thats a concern then regear first.

I started stock then added a small lift and went to 33s. Pain in the ass with the stock trans. Got the OV tune when it first came out and it helped immensely. Planned on going to 35s and got my gears before the tires. With the 33s(actually 32.5) plus 4.88s and OVtune it was almost perfect, a little high on the revs over 70mph but not bad at all. Loved every minute of it. Got the 35s on and now the truck is a little more bipolar with shifting on hills again. Nothing like with the stock tune or anything but it can be a little annoying so I go to S4 mode and control it manually. To me the perfect combo would be 34s with 4.88s and OVtune. Yes,the gears significantly helped the driveability. In my opinion I'd get the gears first and when you can afford the rest of the stuff get it. My logic is that the gears will help your daily drive and even possibly increase your MPG a little and when you decide to get the extra weight added on you will be set to deal with it. If you get all the extras put on now all that added weight will only make daily driving worse and you'll just have to deal with it till you can afford the gears.

I agree with it being a great combo but dont think it matters which one to do first. I do feel like im atleast stock again even with all my gear and tires. Maybe I found the end to the rabbit hole.

HA! You are only lying to yourself, there is no end to the rabbit hole but the adventure of trying to find it is half the fun!
