2001 5VZFE motor replacemnt

Hi guys and gals
1st post obviously..... for my daughter.... hoping you can help me out a little.

She has a 2001 Tacoma crew cab Prerunner with the 5VZFE v6. She threw a rod a several months ago and its been sitting ever sense. It looks like it doesnt make sense to rebuild according to the mechanic.

Im not really wanting an unknown junk yard motor so I started looking into reman's etc.

As I mentioned, it happened a few months ago. I called a Toyota dealer here in town and they quoted $7000 (ouch ). They told me they get them from Jasper.

So then I looked at Jasper and ASAPMOTORS, ASAP was around $1500 for the motor. I dont remember how much Jasper was.

Fast forward to today as now $$ is a little easier.

I looked at Jasper and ASAP websites again but both dont have it listed for 2001, only up to 2000. Jasper's site says "not available".

What gives? Can someone help me out as to why its not showing avail anymore or maybe make a suggestion as to where to get one from (not a junk yard motor)?

I feel bad because I told her a Toyota with only 80k miles would still be reliable.... and not to get a fullsize chevy like me. I put over 150k on my old 88 Toy and that thing was an over achiever and other than a 1 clutch master cylinder (5sp), brakes,tires,battery,oil and gas and it was 100% reliable.

you could look into the yards that insurance companies send totaled vehicles to and you might find a taco with the engine intact... maybe

 

But i think he wants a brand new one.

You can do a long block reman from rockauto for about 1900 bucks. Add the cost of things like gaskets etc. for swapping the needed parts off the blown engine to the new one, you should stay under 2500.

sorry to hear that. i am currently rebuilding the same engine, it threw rod#3 and 4 knocked a new vent in the side of the block. has approx 76K miles. gotta rebuild it.
best thing is to just call around use the engine code -more detailed/reliable. expect to pay 3000-3500 for all parts, gasket kits, etc. it may be less. shooting high just to be on the safe side.
buy a shortblock. send the heads to a machine shop for inspection unless u gonna do it. u gonna rebuild or a shop?
rebuilding is pretty much swapping parts and replacing gaskets.

I'm not looking for new persay but I dont want a completly unknown engine either. No "insurance" type salvage yards around here.... only junk yard about 50 miles away and I wouldnt trust anything more than spare parts type stuff from them such as altenators starters misc stuff; no high dollar stuff.

THANKS for suggesting Rockauto. I just checked it out. Funny thing is that I was just on there TODAY looking for misc parts for my wifes 99 Cherokee and I didnt even think about a long block there.

Mechanic told me theres a hole in the block (I already knew there was one through the oil pan). If so, the core isnt worth the price of GM stock. So that works out to $2300 plus shipping. hmmmm.

I think my mechanic will install it and transfer all the parts (alternator etc) fluids ect for around $15-$1700 so I'm looking at around $4k.

Toyota uses Jasper and gives a 7 yr 100k warranty for around $7k. Id love to do that but it makes me want to puke. Especially since I still have the 1st beater car I bought her a few yrs ago for $2k which is a 90 Corolla.

Any idea how to track down an insurance salvage yard? Is there such a thing?

I sold auto parts for three years. Rebuilt engines were always very frustrating. We would sell one brand for awhile and get comfortable with it, then we would get bit in the ass. I hated selling engines and wondering which customer was going to be the next to have a problem. I even put a longblock in one of my trucks and ended up being the first to have problems with that particular brand.

Knowing what I know now, I believe the best option in your situation is to find a low mileage engine that has not been rebuilt. It is unusual to have issues so early on that engine. There used to be a place in San Diego called TAPs recycling that dealt just with Toyotas. Not sure if they are still there, never dealt with them personally, but you might check them out.

The other option is to find a high mileage engine that has not blown up, and have that rebuilt locally by a reputable machine shop. You may or may not have a shop to take it to. Everyone in my town has an opinion on the two machine shops, some good, some bad.

I'm not sure what it's like but I'm thinking you'll have more honest businesses to get you the parts/engine you need.

 

LOL... I dont know why I wrote "where not to eat me". I just meant where not to eat. Even the Toy dealer uses remans from Jasper... and gives a 7 yr 100k mile warranty.... for $7k. Id love that but its tough to put $7k into this truck. 1st, I bought her the beater Corolla for $2k. 3 yrs later I bought it back from her for $2k since she qualified on her own for a used car loan for her tacoma. Good thing I didnt sell it since its whats shes driving now although the A/C is acting up and summers coming!

I think its a fluke. She had the oil changed about a week before it happened. So guessing she had probably put about 200 miles on it after the oil change before she left to go to San Diego. She doesnt lie... well, not too much and not about things like this.

Out in the middle of no where on a 2 lane road she had just stopped at an agreculture check point (CA fruit fly inspection coming from AZ). This check point is about 120 miles from my house/where she left.

About a mile past it she came up on a car doing about 55. Its a 65 zone and she knows to to speed too badly there. She followed for a short while and then decided to pass. As she was passing she said she got th nose of her truck in front of theirs and boom. While she does speed like we all do.... shes not one to mash the throttle. Confident not an over rev issue. And pretty confident, based on miles driven, that it was not an oil change realted issue. That leaves a fluke left.

Yeah, really unusual to throw parts on 80k mile Toyota. I'm somewhat leary of eveything except Toyota dealer using Jaspers and higher end shops.... unfortunatly, my wallet is leary of Toyota/Jasper and higher end shops LOL.

Honestly I think $7k is worth it on the truck. It should last forever and it'll have a 100k mile warranty on it. Sell the corolla and get whatever you can out of it, then use that toward the remans. And yeah, you confused me with the "where not to eat me."haha
