I think trigger pull weight is important but the number isn't.
I know if I want a trigger lighter or heavier but don't care what the number is.
That said, if you know that the trigger you like is "x"lbs, then you go shopping for a trigger that is "x"lbs.
Seems like a trigger scale would be an excellent thing for your buddy to own :D

I use an old digital fish scale. It is within 1 ounce of a real trigger scale.
And I can weigh fish with it too.

At the end of the day, you can use whatever you want. But for starters, a fish scale has no built in shock sensor to freeze the numbers when the trigger breaks, to keep it from getting inaccurate readings. #2 although I don’t know the configuration of your particular fish scale. I would be willing to bet that you can not get a true in-line position, to measure the trigger in a straight back configuration in line with the trigger correctly., #3 where a digital trigger gauge usually ends, a fish scale usually starts. They are just two completely different functioning load cells. When was the last time you weighed a 1 lb. 4 oz fish. Fish scales just aren’t accurate enough @ very lowweights to engage correctly because they are designed to go up to number like 25-50 pounds. Remember, just because it’s digital, doesn’t necessarily make it more accurate. (Quality). If a person is measuring a 1.5 pound fish, they might want to re-look at there fishing ability! LOL
(not to mention, the potential quality difference between the two also )

Thanks for the reply. I am well aware of all your points.
1 I watch the numbers and listen for the firing pin.
2 I made an extension, it will pull straight back.
3 I have double checked with a 'real' trigger gauge a friend has. As I previously posted, my setting was within 1 ounce of his. I set triggers on my bolt rifles at 32 oz. 31 or 33 is close enough for me.
4 I bought the scale in the 80s. I have set a lot of triggers, and weighed a few fish. I caught an 8lb 2 oz bass. I filled a jug with water to match that weight on my scales. Certified scale at the grocery store said.... 8lb 2 oz.
5 No one has died from my method, yet ;) and no fish have died either. I C&R only.

I havent used my digital fish scale for this but it does measure accurately in the low ranges it also has a Highest weight held, but I dont know if it would work on the the trigger break... We weigh our bass in the 2-3lb or higher range....that is a decent fish for us. Not a record but still nice to catch;)

And that’s fine, obviously you have got it to work. But it seems for all of that fussing around, you could’ve just bought the right tool for the job for $45.

Right, I get it. I’m not saying he broke some kind of international maritime law or anything! LOL. It just seems like for $45 it’s not worth the hassle in the times when it needs to matter. If it’s really not that big of a deal and you’re just checking, then obviously it works
