5100s 2.5 vs 1.75

So I can't make a choice so i need your opinons. Please choose 1.75 or 2.5. Thanks

Rear TSB vs AAL
265/75/16 vs 285/75/16
Weel spacers?

I am leaning toward the 2.5, but do not want the truck to sway and ride like crap. On the other hand it seems 285 are the standard height nowadays. So please choose

 

i chose 1.75 with a 1.5in toytec aal. im happy with it.

 

285 is the thickness of the tire.

I have only a vague idea of what anyone is talking about when they mention the "5100's".

I don't know why anyone would choose to go any other route than having the TSB done, but that's because I don't know any better.

My 2005 DC SR5 has weak rear suspension and I was going to have the dealership take care of it. I don't tow anything or carry heavy loads (right now) but there is a noticeable bottoming out on occasion. What are the other options I should be thinking about and why?

5100s are adjustable shocks, often better than stock. they can lift the front of the truck .85,1.75, or 2.5 inches by simply adjusting the shock. 1.75 and the TSB is level but with 2.5 inches you need an AAL which adds a leaf to you rear spring. This will raise your rear 1 and 1/2 inches to 2 inches vs the tsb which will only raise the rear around 1.25 inches. The TSB is basically an AAl just not as high. The AAl will increase payload just like TSB.

I do 70+ mph on the highway, and it only feels "floaty" if the wind is blowing.

Also I did a 2" AAL, and couldn't be happier. I don't bottom out anymore, and it sagged about a half inch or so, so it sits level.

 

I roll the same way and love it. As a matter of fact, bakerla helped me install it

 

It's the width of the tire but it also determines the height of the side wall.

A 285/70/R16 will have a taller side wall than a 275/70/R16 because 70 is a percentage of the 275.

 

but with spidertrax??? Any rub

 

5100s @ 2.5 with TSB and my truck is level and rides great.

Hey Jeff,
Sounds like you have the exact same truck as me (DC with SR5 package #8...with the LSD). By now your truck is probably getting a bit bouncy over large bumps on the highway (depending on your mileage...I have 90K miles now). I'd been using Timbrens to deal with the bottoming out with heavy loads for the last couple of years, but figured it was time to replace the shocks and add the AAL. If you do it yourself, it'll cost you about $500 after the alignment. Don't bother with the higher-priced TSB at the dealership since you're likely well out of warranty. An AAL is really a very cheap fix (I should have just looked into this and gone this route instead of the timbrens years go). Just go this route, and add the 5100's. Afterward, you'll realize how poorly your old SR5 shocks were working. It will handle loads just fine (no more bottoming out) and will handle ride better than it did when you bought it!

And to the OP:
I would definitely install the diff drop to reduce the stress on the driver's side front diff bearing. No reason for it to wear out sooner and give you the dreaded vibe sooner than necessary.

 

Pictures? All the trucks I've seen with 2.5" in the front and TSB back are slightly nose-high.

Mine are set at 1.75" with TSB rear and I'm level.

 

I have mine set at 2.5 with the TSB AAL and nothing else and it is perfectly level.

How long ago did you get the TSB? Nice truck btw.

 

4 months or so...

and fwiw, when the bed is loaded, the front appears high when it didn't without the tsb.

honestly i like how the truck looks/rides, but if i were to do it again with just the tsb, i'd go 1.75. if it settles down and looks out of proportion, i'll end up adding a block or aal. I kind of wanted a 2.5" lift though...

 

This was my truck with the 5100's at 1.75 and the rear leaf TSB....

 

I have this same set up + the carrier bearing drop and the diff drop. I wouldn't put either of those two on until you see if you have vibes. I've had no real issues other than the normal vibes. I have driven almost 8000mi since the 5100s and the AAL was installed.
