Actual truck stuff today while down at dad's on health watch.
Starting some 30k service items, first time I've touched some in a 2nd gen.

• Cabin air filter Napa 4871 Enviroshield
• Intake air filter Napa Gold 6888
• Door seal kazoo fix, 1/4 in. drip irrigation line I have a couple hundred feet of
• Amerex Purple K extinguisher mounted in a Bracketeer under the front driver seat

Cabin air filter. WTF is with all this cheap ass foam from Toyota? Is the filter in here just to stop the disintegrating foam installed at the factory? Thanks, Obama.




Intake AF. Observation: 5VZFE takes about 5 seconds to change the AF, but the oil filter sucks. 1GRFE, just the opposite. Fucking wrestling match.
Anyway, comparison of Napa Gold to OEM. They have exactly the same number of pleats, and the medium appears to be identical.

This last pic shows the only difference of note, the larger gasket edge seals on the Napa part. I'm good with this.


Kazoo fix. There are fairly predictable hard cross winds on I-80 near the Carquinez Strait, always worse going westbound. I often forget how annoying this is until I approach that stretch of highway once a month or so. We'll see how this does.


The extinguisher and mount (hard to see). All credit goes to @DVexile for his stellar research on this. I just copied him. I had an old, small ABC extinguisher in my old truck(s) for years, and it was time for a thoughtful upgrade, especially with a wee one strapped in the back seat. Thumbs up, K K K Ken!


On another note, I often noticed a faint coolant smell early on after purchasing the truck, and never could find evidence of leakage. Other late model 2nd genners have had similar experiences. Today I noticed what I deem an unusual amount of crystallized coolant on the outer edges of the expansion cap seal and tank that I had never noticed before. I generally keep coolant and vented battery acid cleaned up and tidy. Coolant (cold) was at the low limit fill line. Radiator was full. I realize these have an overflow vent integrated in the cap, clearly shown in these pics, but it appears the coolant is not exiting there, but around the cap seal itself. Doesn't seem quite right. Perhaps it is just another indication of Toyota's commitment to cheaper, substandard materials. Will be monitoring this.

EDIT: I actually suspect it my be a bad seal caused by untrimmed plastic mold flashing around the neck of the tank. This occured to me and then I got distracted before I could grab a knife and trim it off.

 

You're going to be surprised how much of a difference a new cabin filter makes. I have always been happy with Napa and Purolator filters.

Regarding the coolant, I wonder if fabricating a thicker gasket would solve the overflow issue.

Thinking about it, I wonder if the overflow mechanism is plugged and the pressure is forcing the coolant out through the cap-tank seal.

 

I notice the same around my overflow tank. I put a zip tie around the rubber hose to make sure it wasn't coming from there and add a little coolant if I notice it getting low. I've only had to top it off once. I'll have to take a look at the plastic to see if it needs trimming.

‘We’ lit off some fireworks in downtown Spokane just purchased from a stand that was not supposed to be open after midnight. The trajectory of some of the fireworks brought an adrenaline rush from the vendors that were scrambling to close their awning door before the flight vector entered their sales outlet. When four Sherrif’s vehicles arrived encircling us, we opted for two inactions - don’t run and Feign Ignorance. Worked like a charm. The Canadian license plates and our youthful age helped reinforce the Ignorance part making it believable.

 

I just put one on my truck after 10 years of oil changes. Still need a drain pan to catch the oil that goes everywhere when you take the filter off, but still way cleaner than before.

 

oh wait you're first gen. Yeah, that filter is fucked, especially on a 4x4. It sucked on the 22re too. I tried all sorts of tricks, and ended up just using a was of blue shop towels and a shallow salsa cup jammed up there that I could at least dump the filter into immediately. The 2nd gen filter setup is brilliant.

 

That's exactly why they had to change it for the Turd Gen...

 

I'm pretty sure that was the third reason I ran to get one of the last 2nd gens. WTF is up with that hot mess?

 

Luckily I can break my arm in 12 places otherwise the filter would be a pain. Although where it drips on the frame is probably the only 100% rust free area on the thing.

The filter on the Crosstrek is so beautiful I felt a tear brewing.
