Edit: just for you I looked it up here https://cars.usnews.com/cars-trucks/most-fuel-efficient-trucks and the absolute best advertised is a GMC Canyon 2WD 4 cyl diesel small cab and it gets a max of 30 mpg. That's the best out there and that's not actual, that's listed. FYI the Tacoma 2WD 4 cyl was ranked number 6.

Man my truck was great on gas until I lifted it and put 33's on. I swear I was always impressed on long trips. Was super happy. Now I'm scared to take it on the highway because it's 2700rpm the entire time.

First, hypermiling is not a real data point. Second, two people hypermiling the exact same vehicle can get drastically different results because of pushing the envelope as far as mpg. The Tacoma is not the best. It's also not the worst. It's in the middle.

    Also OP,

I care about mpg cause I put about ~650miles/wk on my truck. It costs me 88$ usd to fill my tank right now.

It's the worst as soon as you throw bigger than stock tires on the auto. That's a fact. I lost 3mpg once I put 32's on.

I daily a Land Cruiser that gets 13mpg highway (I rarely drive on the highway during a normal week), and my wheeling rig is a Tacoma that gets 21mpg and requires premium. Neither of those bother me in the slightest and I wouldn't have it any other way

There were a couple posts regarding older gen MPG. For my part, my first gen 6 cyl. 4x4 consistently ran 20 MPG regardless of the conditions. I drive like a grandma as well, so my MPG is usually better than advertised.

....aaaaaaaaaand 11 pages later people still care about and want to debate MPG's despite the OP's original post. I should make a thread titled, "MPG's and how I'm getting 500 miles on one tank" and just watch the internet explode.

I get the feeling that many fail to understand the relationship between tires and mpg. I just pulled off my MT's and put my summer AT's on - Gained 4-5 MPG Highway. (I run 235/85-16's). What happens when you remove the stock tires from your Taco and put on big tires that you think are cool looking...does your mpg go up or down and by how much?

I hear ya. For my part, I like to geek out on numbers and I kinda like the challenge of trying to get better MPG. It's not everyone's cup of tea, I get that for sure.

Lots of people have trouble with basic arithmetic, lot of people think credit cards are their saving grace, lots of people cannot afford not to run bigger tires haha. Helps when you think of the relationship between the center of your axle shaft and the end of your tire as just a single vertical bar, a lever if you will. You make that lever longer from that point and it will get harder to turn from the inside (axle) but easier for the tire to turn the inside (coasting). Your MPG will surely plummet if you make it require more force to turn your wheels. That said you can fix the relationship with lower axle gears. I like 35s haha
