Should I wait on the 2019 TRD Pro?

I've been looking really hard at Tacoma TRD Pros lately and I found one that I like (Cavalry Blue, oversized tires, sidesteps) but I'm not sure if it's too late to go for a 2018 or if I should wait for a 2019. So far the only real differences I can tell are that it has a raised air intake for dust and a new color. Is it worth the wait or should I go for this one? Your opinions are welcomed and any info you have on the new ones would be great, whether negative or positive.

Other than the intake and new color, the main difference I saw between the 18 and 19 is that the 19 has red TRD lettering on the skid plate and the jbl sound system. Although I love the Tacoma, I feel your money would be better spent on an 18 taco pro or the 19 Trd pro 4runner because the 4runner pro has new fox shocks, jbl as well and a neat fj looking roof rack.

There’s not much info on the 2019 yet other than a new color and snorkel. So it’s tough to answer. Toyota is known for doing very little incremental changes every year unless it’s a whole new generation. That being said, it really comes down to how badly you want it and how patient you are. If you can wait for the 2019, wait and see what it has to offer and if you think it’s worth the wait then get it. If not, get a 2018. The TRD Pro is a fun truck and you won’t regret it regardless of the year. Some people will hate and tell you to buy a cheaper one and mod it but it’s not the same. Specially if you’re not into modding. If you can get it in manual, do it. No hate on the autos though. Personal preference.

These incremental changes suck :p I'm just patiently waiting for toyota to up the power on the taco and put front lockers, birds eye camera, etc. With all the new features coming out on new toyotas like the rav4, I'm actually baffled at how expensive a "loaded" tacoma is where for the same price or even cheaper, other toyotas come with more power and/or more tech goodies.

I recommend doing whatever it is that you want. If you found a truck you want, then get it. It's not like it's the end of the year. Stop looking for approval from other people and go buy your truck.

That is unarguably true. However, I come from a 2017 VW Golf R that costs as much as a TRD pro but is loaded with luxury and so much high tech that it wipes your butt at the touch of a button but the technology is very unreliable. Everything worked half the time. I feel really good coming back to the Tacoma with ancient technology but very reliable. Sure, other Toyota cars have high tech but it fails as well. I have a friend with a high end Camry and another with a Prius Prime and both have electrical issues. Sometimes less tech means less problems.

Funny you mention the golf r because I just saw the 2018 golf r today driving by local vw dealership. Wonder if they charge mark up for those too? Anyway......I agree less tech is better for reliability and also maintenance. With all these tech in cars today, dealerships can screw you over saying if one thing is broken then you have to replace this this and this because it's all connected thus draining good mod money

Don’t forget, the only real difference between 17 and 18 was simply adding existing features from other lines (JBL) and safety sense technology (wipe your butt).

I’d say if your worried about overtech go get a used a 17.

Normally, people would consider depreciation in the 2018 vs 2019 decision. That won’t be a concern with the pro, as they hold their value ridiculously well, so take that off the list of reasons to wait (if it even is one). They most likely won’t get cheaper towards the end of the year, Toyota doles them out in such a way that they’re never laying around. They know how to make money on a hot commodity.

I think the snorkel will be an option, anyway. JBL would be cool, but the 2018 audio is pretty good after a $100 ish tweeter upgrade. I would say color choice is the biggest reason. I love my Cavalry blue! It turns heads everywhere I go.

I'm really bad at waiting (I think it's a waste of time) so I just found the one I want, negotiated and drove home with it.

Don't forget the black TRD exhaust tip the 19 Pro will come with! That's at least worth $5000. Special super duper black paint and all.:D Seriously, to me a Pro is a Pro. A 19 won't leave an 18 in its dust on the trails or vice versa.

Color is the only meaningful difference. If you like Voodoo more than Cavalry, by all means wait.

    17. Save the money and use it to mod out. Even though it's a pro you'll still mod.

Tacoma's are selling at very rich margins and are the worst value, highest priced vehicles in Toyota's line up.

Haha. No. Value is not determined by Toyota, it is determined by the market, which is driven by customer demand. So if it costs a lot, thank the people buying it!

Also take a look at residual value. The Tacoma has the highest percentage value of any vehicle manufactured at around 78%. That is driven by demand for used vehicles. Tacomas are also leading for least time in inventory on the lot.

Toyota cannot make enough Tacomas apparently, since they are building a new plant to increase Tacoma capacity. 20K a month is not enough it seems.

Depends on how you asses "value". Value to me is paying for something that will last a long long time and that I won't lose my shirt on when I sell it or trade it in. No other vehicle beats a Tacoma at that.

I got 5k less than I paid for my 2nd gen new...10 years and 175k later.
The only thing I ever had to to do that wasn’t maintaince was replace the infamous chirping pulley.

You can say they are not nearly as feature rich as other Toyota models, but they definitely are the best value.

Buy the 18 now, order a 19 when you can, and drive the 18 untill your 19 comes in.
It’s not like you’re going to loose any money on it.
