3rd Gen Tacoma Transmission Cooler.

Are there any write ups/Guides on installing a transmission cooler for a third gen tacoma that does not have the tow package.
I just had a hitch installed today but will be towing a heavy trailer and will want to install a trans cooler. All help and reccomendations is appreciated!

Ok, I will be doing the transmission cooler mod myself eventually, so I subbed to that thread for future reference.

I will look around and see if there is a more instructive thread.

Not to hijack, but since we are on the subject of transmission coolers... The OR packages seem to have everything listed on the Vspec sheets EXCEPT for the transmission cooler, and the Toyota website shows that a Tow Package is NOT an option on the TRD OR (which kinda makes me think it's not an option because it's standard). I can't hardly imagine that Toyota would install the Xmission cooler without listing them in the specs though.


So, in short, does the '18 TRD OR come with a transmission cooler? If not, it will likely be one of my first upgrades after I take delivery of mine.

 

All 2018 6 cylinder Tacomas have tow pkg. This is no longer an option.

4 cylinder Tacomas can't get the tow pkg.

So no longer an option for the additional trans cooler. Standard for Tacomas that have 6 cylinders

 

That would be something. My 17 TRDOR has a Trans/engine cooler. I checked the window sticker and it is filed under optional equipment.

 

I installed one on my truck about six months ago and I went with a B&M cooler. It was pretty easy to do. Once you decide how you want to mount the tranny cooler. The hose at the bottom right of the radiator (facing the truck) is your line out. You need to use that radiator connection with a new piece of hose and connect it to tranny cooler. Then take the other connection from the tranny cooler and using a new piece of hose to splice it with the hose you disconnected from the radiator. If you don't want to splice the hose then you can run a new hose all the way to the transmission (for me splicing the hose was easier). There is opening to the right of the radiator (facing the truck) and I used that to run all the hoses. i also used a piece of hose to line the opening so that there would be no issues. NOTE: Before you do anything pickup a quart of tranny fluid (ATF WS) from your local Toyota dealer. You're going to need that compensate for the new tranny cooler. Here are some pics of the install. FYI, I painted all the brackets black later.

Well it's good to know you got it! Here is a V-spec for an '18 OR (not the one I am buying). I highlighted the stuff I found related to a tow package. Maybe I just overlooked it on EVERY Vspec I received. Maybe it will be listed on the window sticker. Who knows?

 

I didn't mean it like " well I got one!" I'm just saying it would be bizarre that they discontinued trans coolers for the same option on a following year.

Is the truck you're talking about an OR with manual transmission? If so, I don't think they put the transmission coolers on the manual models.

 

What did you use to top off the ATF? also how did you measure to know when its full

 

It's an auto. I added a pdf file of an OR spec sheet above though, just in case anyone wanted to look to see if I missed it.

I received numerous spec sheets on many auto OR models, and didn't see it listed on any of them. It list the oil cooler and power steering pump fluid cooler.

 

I put about 3/4's of the quart back in. My cooler uses 1/2 a quart of fluid when the fluid is running through the cooler. We put a little more than the 1/2 because we lost a little bit of fluid when testing to see where the fluid came out of the radiator. We made a small funnel using the cap of a squeeze bottle and poured the fluid into to the hose that was still connected to the transmission. After we poured the fluid we clipped the hose so we wouldn't lose any fluid and then we spliced the new hose with the old hose. After we spliced we removed the clip and turned the engine on to test for leaks.
