Rear drum brakes, got myself into a mess

Long story but, trying to figure out how to get the rerar passenger side brakes back together.
Even had a friend come over who works on foreign cars and he cant get it.
Trying to find a exploded view of nice big blow up or something to go by.

The brakes came off no my desire but I was changing wheel studs and drum stuck and long story after that.
All of it sits in pieces on the floor.

Anyone have any idea, pictures, tutorials, help?

 

Take off the other side drum for a reference.

 

I have it off and tried that, good idea, but its all in reverse, and even the mechanic found that to be unhelfpful

 

Doesn't sound like a decent mechanic.. I have a shot of 2nd gen brakes I've been trying to document for people that are completely stumped by such a simple design.. I don't know how it compares to 3rd gen though, or if it will help you when the opposite side didn't. Maybe try taking pictures of both sides of yours and posting them?

Really? WOW. Don't use that mechanic anymore. The other drum is in reverse but not hard to figure out what you need to do.

I had the driver side fully assembled and never touched and he was still not able to figure it out.

There are some other parts missing though. the left side top has another bracket that attaches to that but this gets you part of the way there thank you

 

brakes are nothing to mess around with, if you don't feel comfortable with putting them back together, call a tow truck and take it in

 

Correct, that would be the parking brake arm. As I said this is from a 2nd Gen so keep that in mind if there are differences.

Take a couple pictures of your untouched side and post em.

 

Take your brake parts to the assembled side. Line the up identical to the assembled side on a cardboard box. Pick the box and parts up then bring to the other side. You now know what parts go where and they are not reversed.

 

I remember those on my 1972 Datsun Pickup. It's been a long time since I worked on any drum brakes.

 

you need back brakes already? I got 90k on one set on my T100 years ago and don't usually replace back brakes before 50-60k, what was wrong with them?

 

my bad, so they just came off with drum stuck? not sure what happened...more detail is needed, they shouldn't have just come apart..

Yeah, maybe it's not necessary, but that's what he did.

 

OP, I can assist. So the easiest way to do it is to assemble the drum shoe that has the metal actuating lever on it first, and put the pins in it and everything. Next, you'll want to put the drum brake actuator itself in place, then put the other shoe in with the springs and everything, and then finally you'll compress the opposite shoe in place and use needle nose pliers to get the pins on that side too. Honestly, just start trying to assemble it and if you get to a point where it won't go together then try it again in a slightly different order. It took me about 8 tries to get the sequence down pat but its not rocket science, I can promise you that sir!
