I guess, I have no idea. I have never been up there in those mountains. Driven through on 395 but that's about it.

Im planning on camping at Laurel lakes in august time frame on my way up the 395...thought the trail was supposed to be a little more challenging to keep overlandishers away. Still looks like a beautiful area though. Tons of options around there.

It's definitely not just a fire road. I don't think I could've made it up in 2wd. I put it in 4x and made it just fine. Skid plates and sliders for sure. I nailed my slider on the rock for the last hairpin turn before the top.

Laurel Lakes Trail is a fun ride. You should have good trail worthy tires though, there is a section of sharp lava looking rock. That section doen't look bad but those rocks can cut. After the ride up and back I had a few cuts and sliced lugs on my BFG KO's while another trucks Duratracs had even more cuts and lug damage. None of the cuts caused a leak but it was enough to make me stop at Americas Tire shop to have them checked. It may be doable with 2wd that has a little clearance and good tires. There are spots to turn around if a driver is not sure of his truck/ability/safety. I would try if there was a capable rig in front and in back to assist if needed. Just take it a little slower for the 2wd dudes. I did not roll over rocks large enough to hit sliders or underbelly. The views are worthy of the ride!
Nice camping in a shaded spot on way up the trail. The following pics don't show the sharp rock section that is just a mile or so after the trail begins to really climb and get rocky. These pics show a pretty mellow stretch.
There is also a motocross track close by, off Sherwin Creek Rd. Lots of trails and free camping around Mammoth, just off the 395-especially North of the 203 as you head towards Lee Vining.

The following pic is the hairpin turn where the trail drops down to the lake. The turn is tighter and more off camber than it looks here. There is a place up the trail from this section where you can park off-trail and walk down to access the conditions.

It's a nice trail, even if busier than it was years ago. The scenery is nice, nice camping areas.. and for fly fishermen, a few small trout in the stream down in the valley.

Not sure if campfires will be allowed in June-July but If you don't already have one for 2018, you can get a campfire permit here http://www.preventwildfireca.org/Campfire-Permit/

Thank you so much for posting that, exactly what I was hoping for. Looks like we will pick a different spot or just split the group into 2wd and 4wd.
