Tail light mod (both lights used as brake and signals)?

Placed the order for the switchback V6 Tritons from VLEDs--status of order is 'full backorder,' so that sucks. I added on their pigtail kit and hyperflash fix just in case I need them. I'm not sure what ohms the hyperflash fix is, however..... I can return them if it doesn't work or isn't needed.

I plan to wire it all up so the red "C" is the driving and break light--I'll put brighter LEDs in there once I get it all wired up correctly. The reverse section will then get wired to operate as revers and turn signal. I had thought about adding reverse pods int he bumper and just haveing the OEM reverse section serve as a turn signal, but I think this will create a cleaner look. I also want to connect the V6s up to an auxiliary switch to make them operable without putting the truck in reverse.

My question for you all is can you please provide, or direct me to the post number, that shows how to wire this set-up? I know it has been done, but I don't remember if a diagram was provided. Most of you seem to be doing the tail-as-turn option.

Thanks @RobP62, that one should be of some help figuring it out. It shows how to do the TaT install, but I'm sure I could use it to figure out my application.

 

Well, I remembered this diagram and then there was one someone drew on and iPhone but I thought this one was the winner. LOL. I am by far no electrical engineer.

I dont think there is any drawings for what you want to do. I'm still researching this because I want to do the same setup. I know @mesojdm did this setup on one of his taillights and that's where I first saw it.

As ratcityrain said, it's the diagram I made so in order to turn the entire "C" into both the brakes and the turn signals. It doesn't touch the reverse lights at all.

It's super easy to make the entire "C" into just the brake lights, but using the VLED switchbacks in the reverse light section is where you'll need to give it some thought. It really depends on what input connectors the switchback has. @mesojdm can help you out since he already did this method.

I like you're idea of adding it to an aux switch so that you can turn on the reverse lights whenever you need some extra light. It'd be great at night when you're unloading or loading the truck (Lord knows I've ran into that situation a few times where it would have helped)!

Update for dovetailing in reverse and turn:
Purchased an kit that had the relay built in. Not waterproof, but easily modified to be. Working on the wiring (purchasing male and female sockets to build my own plug and play harness).

Wasn’t satisfied withe bulbs that came with them. Found some T15 bulbs that fit and are bright enough on reverse (didn’t get a good test on the blinker without the harness but looks good too). Will post a link for them if I verify they are bright enough after hooking up a harness.
The rest is fairly easy. Need a few male and female plugs. I am picky and looking for ones that will fit in the OEM lights firmly without modifying the light.
Minor: Debating if I want to turn my old turn into a companion brake is all that is holding me back. It and the running light are already spliced for the topper.

 

Thanks for posting this. Which kit did you go with, reverse or turn priority? I'm planning on doing this mod to make both reds the brake and the reverse either both turn and reverse our add another set of reverse led pods.
Can't stand red turn signals.

 

Turn is the priority at the moment.can imagine a few but don’t see a ton of times I will be in reverse with my signals on.

Still waiting on one more adapter before I wire it all up. Tested in a dc converter so far.
Not sure what resistors are needed, if any. Will be splicing in the old turn signal with my tail lights/brake at the same time via the already in place splice for my topper, and same method on the other side.

The 2 black things on the left are the Turn-as-tail modules that take the blinker and brake light signals and combines it into a single output that you split to both LEDs (top and bottom of the rear tail light). There is a wiring diagram that shows how to connect it all a few pages back.

 

Finally finished my tail & turn light mod so far no problems. I am running all philips led lights in front signal with philips resistor and side light. I also have philips led in my tail, brake, reverse and license plate lights with a 9ohm resistor and diode dynamics t&t. The truck is completely led lights inside and out.

 

My Triton V6s arrive later today. Time to start figuring out the wiring to make the reverse section into a combo reverse/turn. Will also combine the upper red lights into one solid 'C' of running and brake lights.

 

See the post I made above with the exled relay link. I popped the case open, and put silicone around the joint before putting it back together. I had purchased two DPST relays but it would have been a bulky install so went with EXLED's kit instead.

In order to minimize splicing, I'm using t15 female and male adapters in combo with the 7443 male and female adapters to make it as plug and play as possible.
Turn signal has priority on the harness.
Still to do:
Waiting on my 7443 male adapters before installing, but everything has been tested out and so far the light output is pretty good, using autoillumination's 1watt 194 switchback for now. Want to look into a possible retro fit mount for the VLED switchback but that's another day.
Unless I splice into the brake light, I won't be using the 7443 turn signal bulb as an additional brake light, it will just function as a running light. I'll probably adapt the harness to add this later, but it's not in the v1 plan. Will post pics once the harness is finished.
