    Aloha,
New to Taco World and Im looking for new wheels and tires for my 2017 TOYOTA TACOMA TRD PRO. My truck is not lifted and looking for a aggressive all-terrain tire.
    Maybe a mud/all all-terrain?

    Tire Brand?:

    Tire Size?:
    Wheel Brand/Style?:

Thanks for the help in advance!

Go with 17’s. You will have more options when it come to finding the tires you want.

16-inch wheels will give you more sidewall, which is nice when you are running at lower psi. As previously mentioned, 17-inch wheels will give you a better tire selection.

I like my BFG KO2 TA 275/70/17. Its a pretty aggressive AT tire, but its certainly not designed for mud. The size is bigger than stock, but still small enough to fit a full-size spare under the truck in the stock spare-carrying location (if carrying a full-size spare matters to you). The BFG KO2 also has the mountain snowflake, which isn't a snow tire, but its better in snow than not having the snowflake.

I'd prefer 16-inch wheels, but I'm running Icon suspension, and they recommend a 17-inch wheel with specific off-set. Buying tires is fun.

    Thank you Stick! Good info.
I ski, surf and like to go off-road. The High Desert of NV and Cali has all kinds of driving surface conditions.
The BFG KO2 TA 275/70/17 is looks legit.

You say "16-inch wheels will give you more sidewall." Does that mean you have more grip off road when you lower psi?
    Thank you!

285/17 BFG C load. Pretty quiet tire on highway driving.

Go 17’s 265/70/17 if you have stock height and don’t want to cmc and hammer pinch weld.

As far as brand go for Volk if you have the money, SCS is dope I see a lot of them, Enkei is the hot new wheel, methods have some that I like, FN is popular.

Tires go with wildpeakes or st maxx there both AT, a lot of people like ko2 but also say isn’t good for rain or snow. This summer bfg is coming out with the km3. It looks nice for a mud tire.

Here’s some pics of my 265/70/17 Wildpeaks on Methods to give you some reference. Stock suspension. Rubbed a little on OEM flaps but I trimmed them out and now no problems.

Save oem rims for if/when you sell your car. Keep your aftermarket rims and sell those if you can’t use and don’t want anymore. You will probably get more that way. That my plan at least.

Yes - if the size of your tire remains the same (let's say 31 inches in height), a 16-inch wheel gives you more sidewall than a 17-inch wheel.

Positive: More sidewall means more tire, and this allows you a bigger footprint when you let air out of your tires for driving off road. Letting air out of tires increases their resistance to punctures from sharp rocks, provides a greater footprint for more traction, and allows for flotation on sand. At the beach where I grew up, over-sand permits required drivers to deflate to 15-20 psi to reduce the problem of stuck vehicles.

Negative: More sidewall increases sponginess in turns; this is why sports cars have big wheels and tires with almost no sidewall. Sidewalls flex, and this reduces crisp handling. So if you want to prioritize on-road handling, go with 17s, if you want to prioritize off-road handling, go with 16s.

Having said that, the difference between a 16-inch and a 17-inch wheel is not huge when you are talking about a tire that is roughly 31 inches in height.

P.S. My 275/70/17 tires only fit because I have a suspension lift. Previous posters are correct when they say that if your suspension is stock you will want to stay with 265/75/16 or 265/70/17. Both tires are approximately 31.6 inches in height - depending on tire brand (tires listed with the same specs can vary a bit in actual size depending on manufacturer).
