    Ham - Questions -

    https://hamexam.org/

    http://www.arrl.org/question-pools

There are a number of free apps on the phone too.

The margin for error is decent on the test. When I took it, we all got there early and sat in the room reviewing the questions for an hour or so, then just took the test. Its quick cram memory and alot of it is common sense.

2m and 70cm Ham work better then CB at the same wattage output as they are basicly FM frequencies- so much clearer and less interference.

Once you've got your Ham license if you want you can bump to a full mobile set up and run 50 watts - this will easily let you run 20+ miles in open/mixed terrain - further if your up on a peak. But I can pick up the Waltham Repeater loud and clear although out in Saugus and beyond.

I mean I don't care what anyone else is going to do. Personally regardless if it's a small line to cross or not, I'm getting my amateur license soon so I'm staying on the right side of regs. Depending on who's keying up on a Mic, you will get foxhunted in VT by Elmer's. It's trout season still and they have nothing better to do.

Regardless of power the uv-5r from beofeng is breaking regs if you are transmitting without a ham license. Doesn't mean you can't listen.

Murs, fms, gmrs. They're all ok. Gmrs is just a simple one time payment for a family and you get s lil extra omph on their frequencies.

Cb will be good for line of sight. If in doubt, every 10 cars can have a relay to check further back because in some areas you will not have coms outside of 2m (ham).

Me. I'll be sending smoke signals. Don't worry. It's just the BBQ.

Whatever you get make sure it's fcc certified and look up the regs. Google makes this stuff easy.

My 2c, put a ham in front and in back and none of it matters anyways. They'll have the reach.

What I tried to say and maybe didn’t say it correctly:

A licensed HAM can use any of the available frequencies (FRS/GMRS(if separately licensed)/MURS/CB)

But it’s the other way around for non HAMS:
They can use any of the available frequencies (FRS/GMRS(if separately licensed)/MURS/CB) but NOT the HAM frequencies.

On equipment that is fcc certified for those frequencies. Uv-5r is a no go for murs, gmrs, fms even if permitted for gmrs.

This is exactly what I did.

An hour of cramming with my phone app.

    Take test.

    Pass test.

Info dump from my brain to allow for more trivial brain info input.

It'll be ok. Vermont isn't as remote as Western Maine. Routes should be fairly easy. Woret case scenario keep someone in front and rear on 2m.

There's great repeaters up this way and the locals won't mind lending them for a few seconds if needed and call signs are given

Here’s the app that I used. It pretty cool. Hammers the test questions and answers into your brain.

I'm thinking I may join you guys. New Jersey resident here, but family has a house in Jeffersonville, Vt and I am very familiar with all of the waterfalls listed on page 1. I am always up for some hiking, swimming, and especially a little camping.

I love my new truck but miss my Tacoma
Also guys remember that with this may trucks with families going it is going to be almost impossible to get everybody ready and going all at the same time.

This is why I want to give all the information on the trip before we go. I am still in planning phase (believe it or not) because some of these places do not open until late and I'm also trying to get the permits needed and those are not available until 1 month before the trip!!! <<< That part right there is driving me bonkers!
