Bike mount solutions for Bed Side Rail

I dont want to remove the front wheel of the bike, nor do I want to put the bike on the roof of the truck, so I believe this would be my best solution.

I am really interested in the INNO Velo Gripper:

However, I hate the fact that it still has to mount to the top of the bed rail, even for the C-Channel version.

Does anyone know if there is a mount out there that can attach to the side bed rail directly to the bike?

 

I have a tandem and a DCSB, and we just 4-point tie it in like a motorcycle. The grippers are cool, but I have a shell and so the mounts wouldnt work. I think custom grippers like the INNO’s that mount and extend from the side rail would be sweet.

That’s kinda what I’m doing now, but using bungees and just strapping it to the side. Works well since we don’t bike too far from home, but now that we want to venture out a bit I want something a bit more reliable.

 

Maybe down the line when I’m not so insanely busy haha. But something to definitely ponder. Thanks for tagging me

 

This could also apply to regular bikes, not just tandems.

There has to be better options. Seems like the INNO brackets are a bit over priced for what they are.

 

Have you given any thought to a tailgate pad? So cheap and simple.

 

I dont think a tandem bike would fit in the bed with the tailgate closed (See post #3).

Would a bracket and a quickfist work? It looks like there might be space to anchor the quickfist to the first seat tube near the cranks. That combined with a vertical board with a slot all bolted up against the cab rail so you can jam that front wheel in and keep the bike upright. I guess I’m not answering the OP question because it requires minor fab work.

I used T-slot nuts and a pair of lockable mounts. Total was ~$75 for (2) racks, and I had leftover T-slot nuts to mount D-rings for tie downs.

I liked the Inno, but didn't seem worth the price, so I made my own:







Since those pics, I have wire brushed and painted it. I also added a felt pad over the nut on the QuickFist and a wrap of self sealing tape.

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for!! INNO is way overpriced and it looks like you hit the nail on the head with a DIY solution!

It looks like you drilled a hole in the QuickFist, ran a threaded rod through it and locked it with two nuts/washers. However, Im not following what those aluminum brackets are against the C-Channel? Could you explain?

 

I once came across one that was an arm that horizontally came out from the bed rail and grabbed the frame. It didnt go over the top of the side rail which is why it was attractive to me. but it looked too good to be true. Trying to find it online now.

they look to be brackets for a taneau cover or some sort of soft camper shell.

 

I've seen a guy around my area that has a lumber rack with foam pads over the rear crossbar and he just hangs his tandem over the rear crossbar kind of like using a tailgate pad.

 

The hole is already in the QuickFist. I just had to work the larger diameter rod through. Yes, a nut on either side of the QuickFist locking it.

The accessory rail attachment is just one from Hondo Garage. You get four for $12 or $13 shipped.

Like was noted above, the clamp is right near one of my tonneau clamps.
