Shenandoah's nice: Loft mountain campground is my favorite up there. I feel like the south side is much quieter than anything north of big meadows. heading out to Jefferson/Washington national forest for some dirt roads and camping for a few days by myself and then meeting up with some friends to camp in loft mountain campground in the middle of July. Not sure what you consider camping. Usually some good dispersed camp sites free of charge in jefferson national forest. I'm not sure what your idea of camping is, but there are dispersed sites with nothing: bring your own water and something to crap in, as well as a few paid camp sites.

There are some good trails up there, just google trails in the JWNF. Peter's mill, flagpole knob are usually a nice tame trail, but I have used my loppers and bowsaw at times to clear a slightly wider path. Once there was a small downed tree across the trail after a rain storm so again, the bowsaw came in handy. I'd definitely bring the basic cutting tools just in case. Last year I went all year without having to clear a path, the year before it seemed like almost every trail had something I had to get out and move or but out of the way. Never know. I've seen a lot of people post and write about going up those trails, but everytime I've been up there, I've not seen another vehicle so it is very peaceful. although, I've always gone up midweek once school starts up so maybe that's why.

I was down that way for the first time in January. that was nice. Looking forward to my trip in July. First time I've ever been down that way in the summer time.

    welcome to TW

Damn, I shouldn't drink and write.

"I was down that way for the first time in January. that was nice. Looking forward to my trip in July. First time I've ever been down that way in the summer time." should read: "first time I was there in the winter time was this january". It was nice to see through the trees without all the leaf cover.

Shenandoah's nice and has good campsites, if a campsite is your thing. national forest is nice if you like free sites with no amenities but a mile or two between your neighbor.

It's a great area. I'm looking forward to my trip in the summer. I'm looking to hit up some swimming holes. They always look nice in the spring and fall but just too damn cold to actually get in, when we are there.
