Hey all. My name is Nick and this is my first post (of many I hope). I am looking at getting a tacoma for my next vehicle. I am a student still so money is a bit of an issue. I am looking for something under 6K. All the ones in my area are 1999-2003's for this. I have a few questions to get my search started

What would you all recommend to get?
    Should I get 2x4 or 4x4?
How bad are the 4x4's on gas? (I hunt and fish but will not be lifting it as I Know this kills gas mileage)
How long do these motors run?
Any years that are full of lemons?
What year is the best for gas mileage and running mileage?
    how relaible are they?

    Thank you all:)

What would you all recommend to get?
    Should I get 2x4 or 4x4? 4X4 if u need it
How bad are the 4x4's on gas? (I hunt and fish but will not be lifting it as I Know this kills gas mileage) My 04 TRD 4X4 gets about 19 MPGs I lifted mine and i didnt make any difference. It only hurts it if you put bigger tires on.
How long do these motors run? 300-400,000 miles if maintained
Any years that are full of lemons? NO
What year is the best for gas mileage and running mileage? They should all be close
how relaible are they? The most reiable on the road. I have had meny other brands and none came close to toyotas

not sure where you are located but if you have bad winter weather or plan to do any offroading I would recommend 4x4. my truck - 3.4L V6 automatic - gets around 19-23 mpg if I don't push it too hard. Treat them good and Tacomas will last forever. As long as regular maintenance has been done you shouldn't have anything to worry about. One major problem with 1st gens is frame rust - again depends on location - so check underneath, especially around the spare tire mount. Good luck shopping!

I had someone at work tell me toyota buys the truck back if there is frame rust and under 15 yeras old? was I miss informed?

I live in Ontario canada, so i'm no starger to snow haha. I Love to off road ( had a 93 sidekick a few years ago) As for maintance I look after all my cars. I do syntheic oil/filter changes every 5000 Km and tranny/filter 100,000 Km. I drive like a grandma to haha. 22 and I have never been pulled over

are standards much better on gas?

The buyback is still going, just wanted to be sure you were aware of the rust issue. Why buy a truck that you know has major problems, right?

Gas mileage - at least in my experience - is about the same for both manual and auto trannys. Previous Taco was a 99 manual 4 cylinder, now I have a 99 auto V6. Different engines, different tranny but same mpg's. Earlier Toy pickups (early 90's) were solid vehicles too - if you can find one thats been treated well. Used to have a 94 4cyl, still see it around sometimes, got to be over 200k on that thing by now!

Yea i know what you mean. Nice to know that toyota stands behind their cars like that. I have never heard of that befor.

I was looking at S10's and rangers untill I seen the gas mileage. then someone at work point me to these guys. I have talked to a few customers that have come in and have never heard one bad thing about them. I'm stocked for the end of summer to come:)

whats a normal body lift on these that looks good with stock tires?

These trucks are bullit proof no jk. And do not get a body lift. They are dangerous and can damage your truck. And welcome to TW. :D

I have seen them damage the body mounts and the cab rip off the frame in a wreck, there not safe at all. If you want a lift get a suspension lift.. And just a FYI use the search button, you will find most of your answers to your questions. And no there are no scooped hoods unless you fab one or buy a glasswork hood.

I have a '98 V6, ext cab, 5 speed manual 4x4 (TRD package) and it is friggen bomber.

Only routine maintenance, an engine flush at 90,000 miles and a timing belt change at 100,000 miles.

I get about 21 mpg combined city and highway/rural driving.

I drive Colorado's mountain passes all year long - especially in the winter - and this truck is without fail. Put a set of BF Goodrich all terrain tires on and it drives through snow like an Abram's tank.
