I wouldn’t worry about brakes with a load that light.

 

These are pretty much the specs of my last boat. Towed very easily behind my Tacoma V6 and my previous I4 Tacoma. It had surge brakes, but they were terrible. Brakes probably needed servicing but the truck did fine. I maybe towed an hour each way once a year and that boat was wet slipped most of it's life so trailering wasn't as big a deal to me. My boat now is much larger, but still within the Tacoma's ability. Brakes are much more important now.

 

That said, most boat trailers have surge brakes or electric over surge when applicable. Electric brakes don't like getting dunked in water repeatedly.

I have an Equal-i-zer hitch, setup by the dealer. Tekonsha brake controller.

Exactly my trucks hitch capacity and as I believe you mentioned the 23FB is a bit less.

 

We just bought a trailer that when fully loaded will be 6,500lbs (27 ft long). I'm looking for good towing mirrors. Can you tell me what kind you used (or if you used any) and if you had a back up camera on the trailer? Thx.

 

6500 lbs??? Let us know how that works out. I know it's rated for it, but it may struggle a bit.

I use these mirrors with my a-frame and they work fine. Still a bit of vibration at freeway speeds, but they are pretty solid below 60-65MPH

Looking for some insight here, as I'm reading a lot of your guys posts that are towing a trailer heavier than mine, with what sounds like better results than what I get. Does my situation sound abnormal? Maybe too much or too little tongue weight? Do I sell it and buy a F150 ecoboost? Halp!

When towing in S4 with ECT on at 65-70mph the truck has to downshift to 3rd on any kind of incline to maintain speed. This makes the truck scream around 4,300rpm. Only in damn near perfect conditions can it maintain speed in 4th gear. I've tried just D with ECT on and it would not upshift past 3 gear unless going downhill or take my foot completely off the gas. Cruise control is absolutely pointless as it either gets stuck in 3rd gear or it constantly shifts from 4th to 3rd to maintain speed.

Your tires are inflated at what pressure (PSI) ? It make a HUGE difference

I put mine at 50 psi (truck and trailer) when towing heavy load

And our 3rd Gen.

The 2nd gen towed fine in 4th; highway speed was alright, mileage was terrible, I've passed a total of two other vehicles ever.

We'll see this summer.

 

Truck tires I believe 34psi (per the “book”). Don’t recall the trailer tires but they have nitrogen and a valve stem cap that shows color if they’re good or bad pressure.

 

Hey everyone,

I will be moving in about 6 months and want to try and move ourselves using the taco for mostly financial reasons. My plan is to tow the largest uhaul rental trailer from Washington DC out to LA....its a long ride and will be made over several days. I estimate the loaded trailer will be about 5500lb and I have a leer camper top on the bed. I was going to get a break controller but further research showed the uhaul trailers just have build in inertia breaks. I know it's not ideal but I'm confident the Taco can make it even if it isn't pretty. Any advice to help make the trip a safer one? Recommended routes? Upgrades? Accessories?

Ps. I have a 2017 DCLB OR. Please correct me if I'm wrong/a few specific questions.
-softer suspension not helpful
-longer wheelbase is a plus
-added weight for being the DCLB relevant to max of 6400?
-DCLB comes with a transmission cooler that DCSB does not? I heard it on YouTube wasn't sure if that's true.
-can I add a weight distribution hitch to a rental trailer?
-expected MPG of 10-15 if I baby the throttle?

I pull a 17' Casita with my 2018 trd off-road long bed. I use a FastWay hitch which has double sway bars . The Casita weights about 2,500lbs. With about 400 tongue weight. It pulls it great.

 

2016, V6 6-spd Manual with tow package. Trailer is a Winnebago Winnie Drop 1710 (18', 2400 lb dry weight), Anderson hitch. She tows purdy nice

But we've decided that the trailer is too small. We get our Winnebago Micro Minnie 2106DS (22', 3700 lb dry weight, tandem axle) in a couple weeks.

 

That's going to be quite the hike with that much load. Your camper top factors in to your GVWR which will affect your max towing capacity. If your truck has the towing package, it does have the trans cooler.

I tow my boat that is 5000lbs loaded, on the trailer and I would not tow it to LA with this truck. I towed it 30 miles yesterday and based on my calculations I saw 6-8 mpg in a strong crosswind.
