I bought A 2017 Tacoma off road in inferno color, November of 2017. It now has 6,300 miles on it and I have only drove it on a gravel road once for maybe 6 miles total. I just recently noticed rock chips behind the rear door on both sides, and was curious if anyone else has had the paint chip this fast and easy from road rocks and such.

That sure seems like an odd place for gravel/rocks to chips just on that edge. That's why the black plastic piece is on the bed behind that. Are you sure that's what did it? There wasn't anything in the door when it was opened/closed that would have done that?

Yeah that doesn't look gravel or rocks hitting it considering it's just in ONE exact spot. Looks more like something was rubbing up against it.

Seems odd that it would be both sides if something were shut in the door. Do both sides look similarly damaged?

Agree with @rlx02 , Have you notice the same issue on the passenger side?
From your picture that looks like something drag in and out repeatedly. See the marked blue circle, that looks like some teeth-marks rubbed against the edge.
    Only you driving the Taco?

For some reason the thought of a dog on a chain running into the truck comes to mind?

A few times a month I will drive on a small number of dirt roads / gravel roads and havent experienced that. Doesnt seem possible 6 miles would be so dramatic.

hmm. Door open and something pulls down and rubs against it? Like a tie down? or a dog jumping out of the truck? I think the other guys are right, something is definitely rubbing in that area that isn't the gravel.

Any kids? A backpack or something being pulled in by the handle as they climb in could do that if the zipper or something hard on the pack hits it.

Doubt that's from gravel. You can protect your lower doors more with mud flaps and running boards, even though everyone hates them here. If I were you I'd wash and wax my truck and then take it to the dealer to see if they will do anything for you. If it isn't from something repeatedly rubbing it, then it would seem to be a defect in the paint.

Dealer is not responsible for those chips, those are from a dogs chain or something else.

I'm hoping OP doesn't figure this out and not come back to let us know. Curious as hell, now.

If this were my truck, and I could say with certainty that they are not from a dog chain or something else, then you better believe the dealer would be responsible.

disagree. The chips are clearly from damage. This is not a dealer warrantied item. There is no bubbling which would be indicative of bad paint. Something scratched/chipped the paint off, he just needs to figure out what did it.

Disagree. Paint can fail without bubbling.... Regardless, in my last post I said 'if'. It looks like something rubbed directly against it repeatedly. If the damage was not caused by that then Toyota should be held responsible for a literally flaky paint job.

The dealer would laugh lol and Toyota would too. Paint does not "fail" like that. I second the dog chain scenario thing. I drive on gravel roads all the time. I have some chips in the bedside clear plastic down near the bottom but not very many. No chips in that specific place.

It's possible the door isn't flush or might sit inside some when fully closed and catching small dirt from the road. It happens a lot on pickups when the bed is not centered correctly. It catches all the stuff from the road, like small sand blasting. Just a thought, looks like an easy fix. A good painter can fix it and spray it, back taping it and blend the clear.

Even if the paint didnt "fail" it could be an issue of door alignment causing that specific area to "stick out" rather than be flush with edge of door. Any road debris would catch that and wear on the paint.

Edit: @mds08 beat me to it.

The more I look at it, it's getting peppered from the road.
