I agree. When I detail my truck if I put too much tire shine on the front wheels, it's in that area where I get sling marks from the gel. I'd also like to give OP benefit of the doubt that he's not so clueless that he repeatedly lets his dog run into the truck with a dog chain attached. Who chains their dog anyway?

 

Maybe I’m just more relaxed, but that damage doesn’t seem like that big of a deal. Don’t get me wrong, a proper paint job from the factory is expected but let’s be real. You have almost 7k miles on the truck. If it’s a daily, it’s going to get scratches. If it’s chipped, touch it up and move on.

 

I needs to be fixed properly. Too big of an area to just touch up, then it would look like ass.

 

It's actually in a really easy area to touch up since its the textured lower panel, but that's a pretty significant amount of paint to have chipped off down to bare metal in 7 months, and repainting won't fix the root of the problem if it wasn't caused by a rogue imaginary pet.

 

Dealer will laugh you out the door.

 

If the door was not alligned properly from the factory and the body edge is sticking out past the door he just might have a good arguement.

 

OP is the bed getting any damage? Looks like it in the pic. Just above the black molding.

 

If you zoom in it appears to have damage on the rear edge of the door as well. Maybe the seatbelts and kids in the rear?

 

You think rocks are going between the door jamb? that edge doesn't stick out past the side of the truck.

 

I agree this is not rock chips but abuse/wear and tear. Something is dragging in and out of the door. Think through your routine and figure it out so you can stop further paint damage.

I would sand down the area with fine grit wet sandpaper, treat the area with an de-ironizer spray, clean with iso propyl alcohol, and touch up paint the area thouroughly to prevent rusting.

To get a perfect fix youll have to repaint the panel. Will likely be very expensive.

 

Looks that way to me. The door is not flush causing the edge to catch road grime, dust or small particles to pepper the edge. No rocks per say. Just my opinion, seen similar issues when beds are not adjusted correctly.

 

Easy fix, no need to repaint the whole panel. Blend in some base and blend the clear in the groove since it's a lower side area. Easy fix.

There aren't significant rock chips anywhere else on the side that I can see from your photos. I agree that it's probably from something consistently rubbing up against that spot, or you were carrying something metal and dropped it trying to put it in the back seat, scratching that corner. It does very much look like marks from a chain, though. Both sides of the paint removed are worn in a pattern that doesn't look like it could've been caused by anything else.

 

Just to clarify. If your truck started chipping like this, and you 100% knew for a fact it was through no fault of your own you'd just be like, 'meh no big deal, I assume full responsibility for this shitty 6 month old paint job'?? I don't care if you think the op ran a fucking grinder on the edge for 10 minutes, that's besides the point of how his damage happened. If this happened to you on a 6 month old vehicle you would do absolutely nothing? Genuinely curious.

 

Look man, not trying to be rude but this is getting a little ridiculous. That is obviously not a manufacturers defect, you can clearly see that something has been rubbing up on or chipping at that edge. If that was my truck, Id be looking at figuring out how I let that happen via my own fault, or that of one of my passengers.

Implying “its 100% through no fault of his own” is pure silliness. Reaching at best.

Seems to be a trend with Toyota’s newest customer base. No accountability. “Blame blame blame!” is the name of the game!

 

I agree with what you've said. All I was saying is that if anything happens to my vehicle under warranty I take it in to have the dealer fix it. That is the beauty of buying a new vehicle with a warranty. I don't go in every week because a speaker is rattling or there's wind noise or some other bullshit complaint. I think it's hilarious that the common reaction on this forum is for guys to puff their chests out and scoff at going to the dealer for a resolution, especially when 99% of those are driving vehicles long out of warranty. If it's your fault, live with the consequences, if it's not hold whoever is responsible accountable especially if that's the manufacturer.

 

Our point, rock chips or chain or abuse or whatever, is not a warrantable thing. Even if his door is slightly misaligned (possible for sure) they will fix the door alignment. That's a warranty thing. Fixing the chips? The only way that would happen is if you have a good dealer that is willing to grant you a goodwill fix. Now if you can make a case (highly unlikely) that the paint is not adhered properly to the vehicle then that would be warranty. But rock chips from driving down a gravel road? Nope.

 

Rock chips from a gravel road - nope. But paint wear from a misaligned door... I'd put up a fight for that for sure, and feel entitled to do so.
