    Greetings Tacoma Friends!

First post on TW, but I have been using these forums for a good while now. A lot of what you all post here is very helpful and informative, with that said - I am in search for a short bed tonneau cover. What I am looking for in a tonneau is storing and securing my belongings in the bed of the truck when I am away. I am not looking for a tonneau that will break the bank but willing to pay for a quality cover that is not soft and unsecure. I heard the Roll-N-Locks (retractables) are the great but also heard some tri-folds such as Extang and/or Bakflip are noteworthy too.

There are a lot of good options on the market however I wanted to know what you all recommend. Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to TW.

There are a lot of options when it comes to bed covers; whether it be a tonneau, shell, or softopper.

You can find a lot of information in the tonneau covers, caps, and shells sub-forum. Lots of reviews of what has worked and not worked for a lot of folks. Reviews of different covers, shells, etc. You should be able to find what you are looking for in there.

I personally have used BAK, Extang, Truxedo, and now have a SofTopper. I have good luck with all of them. It will boil down to personal preference, function, and even appearance for what you are looking for.

Had backflip covers on two previous trucks and loved them but since they don’t seem to have composite anymore, just aluminum I didn’t spend the extra money and went with a soft roll up this time.

Very interesting, thank you for this. I always wondered how people liked the trifold versus the others. Thanks!

This is very helpful! Thank you! I will have to rummage through the link you provided. I too liked the BAK and Extang but didn't know anyone who personally had one or could comment on those brands.

I went with a TruXedo TruXport roll-up cover. It doesn't offer any real security - anybody with a pocket knife could get in pretty easily. But, for me a soft roll-up cover gives full bed access without having to remove it like a hard cover tonneau. I was having a lot of trouble deciding between a tonneau and a camper shell mainly due to bed access when I need the top off for moving furniture, mulch, other large items. This was one of the least expensive tonneaus I found, so if I change my mind in a year and decide to get a camper shell it's not too much money lost. For my needs it has been a great tonneau.

What ever you chose don't pick the rollnlock. It will freeze in the winter and makes it impossible to open. Also because you have a short box the rollnlock takes up a large part of the front section of the box. It also cans be removed easily.

I had the Extang Solid-Fold 2.0 for about a year before getting a canopy. I liked it. It secured closed by two springs on each side of the bed that you have to pull down and latch. It stayed closed fine without locking them and you just tucked the handles up into the cover. It was solid! It came off easy also as it was held on by two wing nuts near the front. I would take it on and off all the time since it was so easy and pretty lightweight. Very good cover, IMO.

I have the Gator FX cover and have been quite happy with it. It's been installed since September. My truck bed stays dry, even in the crazy Dallas rain. It allows me to lock the tailgate and have that added security for anything that I have in the bed.It also has a low profile so its not sticking up much from the rails.

I got the Diamondback cover. Got a good deal from Realtruck. Very happy with it. Not inexpensive though.

I like the looks of the Undercover Elite and as soon as I free up some "fun funds" I'll order one. Because of they way the top fits over the bed rails and has no joints, it should be very good at keeping moisture out. Of course if you very frequently need part of your bed open, this might not be a good option although removal of the top for full bed access is fairly simple and can be done by one person. Just a tad over $1000.

I have this on my TRD Pro and its OK. Not as functional as I had hoped. Looks cool and hold the heavy loads. had 1,200lbs on it and plenty of tie down cleats. Still wish I would've gone with a Leer Cap....

I totally agree with @Powderhound78. I have an Extang Solid Fold 2.0 and it's a great cover.

Diamond Back looks cool. Still you don't get the room that a Topper offers.

I decided to go with something cheaper this time, all I want to do is keep the bed clean and dry, I'm not worried about security. I picked up an American Tonneau trifold from Autoanything.com (list was $279, they dropped the price to $264 easily). It fits better than the Tonneau Pro Hardfold I had on my '15.
I'm pretty happy with it. If it lasts for 3-4 years I'll be thrilled.
