Travel Trailer towing

I have a 2006 4x4 Taco with towing package. Its not a TRD. From your guys experience would a 5200lb GVWR trailer be safe to pull with my truck? I know that my truck is rated at 6500 for towing, but I'm more wondering about stopping and handling. Thanks

Does the trailer have brakes? Surge or electric? If electric, got a good brake controller?

Is 5200lb the real, dry weight or GVWR?

 

Find out the real weight of the camper when loaded.. Towing is the easy part, stopping is the tricky thing. Make sure you have the right gear to make it safe. Trailer Brakes, Brake controller, Weight Distribution hitch/sway bar.

if it is 5200, I wouldn't worry about it too much except Mountain passes, and Mountains..

 

5200 is the GVWR. The trailer is a 89 24' Fleetwood. I couldn't find the dry weight tag. I'm going to see the trailer again on tuesday, so I'll look harder then. It has electric brakes. I don't have a controller yet, but will be purchasing one. I was also planning on installing a weight distributing hitch.

 

Brake Controller, and a WD hitch you should be fine. I have a little popup, probably 4000lb when loaded.. Very easy for the truck to handle, but you would noticed instantly if the Trailer Brakes weren't working. I have towed it every other weekend (almost) for roughly 3 years now with a Tacoma. Never a problem except having to stop every 200 miles for gas.

 

I pull a 4200lb - 23 foot hybrid camper. When loaded it is more like 5000lbs. I have 32" tires and the trd exhuast. With the electric brakes i have no problem towing at all. I actually caugth myself going 80mph on the interstate on the way home from camping last weekend,

You aren't supposed to tow over 55 with BIAS tires, but if you have radials.. you are "supposed" to be able to drive faster. I tow at 70, and sometimes will hit 80mph.. I get run over if I don't get a move on. ya-know?

 

Yep two taco's. The Blue one is my company truck. I love that i'm not running up the miles on my TRD. Scored my TRD 1.5 years ago with 16,000 miles. And just flipped 26,000 a couple of weeks ago. Bought it at the perfect time when no one was buying cars. Scored it Toyota certified for 4K under nada.

I usually only tow around 70mph when towing, but was passing someone and got up to 80mph last weekend. Didn't know that about bias tires. I will have to check and see what i have. I've only had the camper 2 months. I want to switch to some alum rims anyway. Might switch tires too.

Very cool, the tail of two Tacos.. I used to have Bias Ply tires, and one summer when it was real hot.. Pavement was hot, and at that freeway speed, it just blew up the tire. tire pressue seems to be the most important thing and you need to check it when you our our on the highway at speed.
