Deck Plate Mod?

I own a 2002 Tacoma 3.4L and I was wonder what is the diameter of the deck plate you should buy. I looked all over and couldn't find what size everyone was putting in. I plan on putting this mod in this weekend but need to know the size of the deck plate to buy.

 

4" should fit perectly.

 

Awesome, thanks man. Also I was wondering if its better to get the deck plate that has the wire mesh or the open deck plate? I was going to go with the wire mesh deck plate to keep large objects out of my filter. Anyone have a recommendation?

 

The wire is a good idea. You could do it easily w/ some window screen. I didnt bother with doing it tho...too lazy

 

4" and yes get the wire mesh. A guy on here had a rat (I think thats what it was) get in his airbox and chewed up his airfilter, dont remeber what happened to the rat though lol!

Rats can get in via the elbow also. I put some 1/4" hardware cloth in it to keep them out.

4" and no mesh for me. I actually just completed this mod 2 days ago...man you can really tell a difference in the acceleration. I also noticed a slight gain in MPG but I'll wait till my next fill up to affirm that. I will say that the gas gauge has taken longer to go down since doing this mod. But I really like it. Changed the way my exhaust sounds as well. I like this mod. Oh BTW, make sure when you do this to be ready to clean up a lot of little black flakes of plastic...when you start cutting those shaving go everywhere.

 

yeah i remeber the airbox rat thread. i went with the 4" no mesh.... also lazy as stated above

 

I'm new to Tacoma's. Let me understand this correctly. So the "Deck Plat Mod" is to cut a 4" hole on the side of the airbox? This will increase airflow to the engine thus better mpg and performance?

My own concern is that people who 4wd a lot in dusty areas will get their air filter dirty quicker.

 

Well thats the beauty of the deck plate...you can put it back in...

 

If your off roading a lot then your going to get your intake dirty anyways, why not have the extra power while your at it? Even so when your done off roading just take out your cleanable air filter and clean it, or just plug the whole when your off roading. Just a thought.

By far the best mod I've done. The acceleration and response is awesome and I love the sound it makes when you hit those higher rpms

Eric, Hey I never found a deck plate locally or back home so I had to order one. I hope it comes in sometime this week. I might hit you up on using the garage to do the mod. I have little to no tools here in K-Falls.
