Excuse my ignorance but I see that you listed 4.86 gears for the rear and you're running 4.88s up front. Does this difference in gear ratios not cause anything to bind since it's such a small change in ratios?

Yeah no biggy at all. As long as you are within 2% of gear ratios you are fine. Ford gears don’t make a 4.88. Lots of crawlers run slightly taller gears up front vs the back to help pull over obsticals.

Not the choice of this build. It's more of a camping, wheeling, not overland (cause I hate that fucking term), do it all kind of build. If I wanted to build another desert rat like my first gen, I would have done the 3.5" front TC kit instead of the 2". Yes you get tons of uptravel but at the sacrifice of load capacity and having to better pick lines when crawling to avoid dragging the springs.
I'm strapped right at 11.5" of travel up front and a short hair over 13" in the rear. SUA packs are flexy but don't do well with the weight. My truck is 6300 pounds loaded for camping. No SUA pack is designed to handle that.

I was camped up in Oregon in a state park we happened to stop at on a recent trip. One of the rangers stopped by as I was unpacking, my girlfriend was standing by supervising and the ranger came up to her and said (word for word) "awesome truck, Im an overlander myself" Not having a clue what that meant, she just said, "Thank you"

    It was hilarious.

This is all very interesting, and JBerry813 is obviously a genius. I admit, I don't understand any of it... except for this. [IMG]

The 9" is a nice axle and definitely a better diff but the regular 31 spline axle shafts arnt really any stronger then stock Toyota stuff. Did you go 35 spline?

Currie's Tacoma OEM abs sensor compatible axles come standard with 35 spline axles.

Nice! I wasn’t aware of that. I haven’t really looked into them as I’m running fj80 stuff in my first gen.

Do 35 spline axles replace 31 spline without modifying the diff?
